There’s no place quite like home for the Houston Dynamo.
Wilmer Cabrera’s men moved to 7-0-1 at home on Wednesday night with a 5-1 win over Real Salt Lake to end a miserable three-game winless run.
Alex and Leonardo scored their first goals of the season and Erick “Cubo” Torres’ 10th of the campaign led the way for the Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium.
Justin Schmidt’s own goal only three minutes in would foreshadow RSL’s long night ahead. Mauro Manotas crossed a ball in from the left side of the box that struck the leg of the RSL defender and found the back of the net.
Alex was the first Dynamo player to get on the score sheet. The Brazilian, who made 100th club appearance on Wednesday night, netted his first strike of the season in the 15th minute on a corner kick routine in which he ran from right to left into the box before striking the bottom part of the goal.
Mauro Manotas added to the fireworks show moments before halftime after a sublime a no-look heel flick from Torres in the middle of the box, Manotas struck his shot perfectly past Nick Rimando to set the Dynamo up with a three-goal lead after 45 minutes.
Houston continued to overrun the RSL back line in the second half. Torres got on the end of the fourth Dynamo goal in the 52nd minute after Alberth Elis surged past Schmidt.
Despite their catastrophic night, RSL had a moment of magic less than 20 minutes into the second half. Joao Plata’s bending free kick was no match for Tyler Deric, as it swiveled around Houston’s wall and flew into the back of the net.
Substitute Boniek Garcia set up the final Dynamo tally of the night in the 68th minute, as his sensational cross found Leonardo for the defender’s first goal of 2017.
The Dynamo will try to carry Wednesday’s performance into Sunday in an attempt to rectify their porous 0-5-1 road record in Seattle. RSL remains in Texas this weekend for a clash with FC Dallas on Saturday.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Torres continued his hot form with a goal and an assist. The Mexican forward is the second player to reach 10 goals in MLS this season.
MOMENT OF THE MATCH
There was no better way for Alex to celebrate his 100th appearance than with his first goal of the season. The strike also put RSL in an early two-goal hole that they couldn’t recover from.
MATCH TO FORGET
Schmidt had a rough night in defense starting in the third minute with his own goal. In addition to scoring on his own net, the RSL defender had a rough night keeping up with the pace of the Dynamo attack.
