MLS Ticker: Dzemaili joins Impact, RSL adds DP forward and more

The final day of the transfer window produced a light amount of news, but there was one significant signing announced, one that came from the Montreal Impact.

The Impact officially announced the loan of Swiss international Blerim Dzemaili from Bologna. The 31-year-old will take up a Designated Player spot on the Impact roster.

Dzemaili has spent the majority of his career in Serie A with Torino, Genoa, Parma, Napoli and Bologna. He also spent time in England with Bolton Wanderers, Turkey at Galatasaray and in Switzerland at FC Zurich. He joins Ignacio Piatti as the DPs on the Impact roster, and he’ll join the club for training on Wednesday.

RSL adds DP forward Savarino

Real Salt Lake bolstered their forward line with the signing of a Designated Player.

The club announced on Tuesday that Jefferson Savarino has joined on loan from Zulia in Venezuela. The forward signs as a Young Designated Player after providing 22 goals and 12 assists in 48 matches in the Venezuelan Primera Division. With the addition, RSL also bought down Joao Plata’s contract using Targeted Allocation Money.

“Jefferson is someone we’ve been tracking from our scouting department to the first team staff and we’ve done a great deal of research on him.  He has a lot of talent and a lot of upside,” RSL Head Coach Mike Petke said.  “We’re excited to have him come in here and help the team win games, but also to have him along with the other wide players to push each other and help each other.

“There will be an adjustment period, as usually happens with players from different countries, but we’re looking at the long-term prospect of a young kid who is doing very well right now and we hope and expect him to make the next step.”

Koffie returns to Revs

The New England Revolution added reinforcements to the central midfield position on Monday by acquiring Gershon Koffie on loan from Hammarby in Sweden.

“Gershon had success with us last season and we feel fortunate we were able to reacquire him,” Revolution general manger Michael Burns. said “We look forward to having him back for the remainder of 2017 and expect he’ll be able to come in and make an immediate impact.”

The 25-year-old broke into MLS with the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2011 and moved to the Revs for the 2016 season. Koffie appeared for the Revs in 22 matches before moving to Sweden over the offseason. He played three matches for Hammarby before the loan move back to MLS was finalized.

Whitecaps in line to bring in another striker

The Vancouver Whitecaps are still in the marker for a striker, despite bringing in Fredy Montero in the offseason. Carl Robinson needs some depth behind Montero, and he might have found his man.

According to The ProvinceVancouver is signing Bernie Ibini, a 24-year-old Australian who spent time on loan at Sydney FC from Club Brugge recently.

D.C. United terminates Tissot contract

D.C. United made a roster move on Monday, but it was one that saw them trim it, not add to it.

Maxim Tissot was let go by D.C. United on Monday, with the club essentially deeming him as surplus now that Chris Korb is back in the picture. Tissot started one match for the Black and Red before having his contract mutually terminated.

    • I like that just about all of those highlights are on the break, which is how Montreal like to play. Seems like a good fit with Piatti and Oduro and the counter that has made Montreal dangerous the past couple of years.
