Report: MLS in talks with Real Sociedad over Vela

One of the highest profile players from North America has once again been linked with Major League Soccer.

ESPN reported on Tuesday that the league is in talks with Real Sociedad over the 28-year-old Mexican international.

Vela was last linked with a move to MLS in 2016, with the San Jose Earthquakes, Colorado Rapids and Chicago Fire reportedly in line for his services back then. But now with LAFC entering the league in 2018, bigger clubs may be in for Vela.

This would be a significant move for MLS, since Vela is one of a few big names from Mexico that would draw more interest from south of the border. Vela’s spent his whole career in Europe. His last move was to Real Sociedad on a permanent basis from Arsenal in 2011, and he has been there ever since, scoring 52 goals in 168 appearances for the club. Vela has scored on 15 occasions in 51 appearances for El Tri.

With LAFC looking to make a big splash upon its entrance into the league, much like the one Atlanta made this season, it makes sense that it is in the market for Vela, but the LA Galaxy are also mentioned in the report. The Galaxy are in the market for a designated player and already possess one Mexican star in Giovani dos Santos on their roster.

  1. I’m a broken record on this but I’m a huge fan of MLS being/becoming the destination for our top regional talent throughout CONCACAF.

  2. Anyone but LA Galaxy… Through extensive therapy, I’ve managed to accept GDS on our squad (even though he’s been toothless this season), but adding another El Tri player would be a bridge too far…
