SBI Americans Abroad Player of the Week: DeAndre Yedlin

DeAndre Yedlin faced plenty of questions heading into his debut season with Newcastle and, even long before this past weekend, the U.S. Men’s National Team fullback answered many of them. But on Sunday, Yedlin and Newcastle secured something remarkable: a league title.

Yedlin provided an assist on Newcastle’s first of three goals in what ended up as a 3-0 win over Barnsley. The win, coupled with Brighton’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa, sealed Newcastle the English Championship title while earning Yedlin honors as SBI Americans Abroad Player of the Week.

The USMNT fullback was a terror down the right side throughout the 90 minutes, but his best moment came on the game’s opener. In the 23rd minute, Yedlin received a backheel pass from Christian Atsu, leaving the door open for a cross into the box. Yedlin’s pass found Ayoze Perez for what turned out to be the game-winning, and title-clinching, goal.

Yedlin beat out several contenders for this week’s award, including Eric Lichaj, Ethan Horvath and Tim Ream.

What do you think of Yedlin’s efforts? Which American Abroad stood out to you?
