SBI Americans Abroad Player of the Week: Joe Corona

Club Tijuana was in need of a spark, and it was Joe Corona who stepped up and provided it.

As the top seed entering the Liguilla, Xolos were down a goal to Morelia on aggregate following a 1-0 first leg defeat. With just three minutes until the halftime whistle, Corona provided the equalizing assist, earning him honors as SBI Americans Abroad Player of the Week.

In the 42nd minute, the Xolos was set for a corner kick, one which was swung in towards Corona. The American midfielder headed an effort toward goal, but it was Henry Martin that jumped in to redirect it into the back of the net. The assist may or may not have been inadvertent, but it was certainly effective as Club Tijuana went on to win the match, 2-1, to advance to the competition’s semifinal round.

The assist earned Corona Americans Abroad Player of the Week honors, beating out goalscorer Jerome Kiesewetter and penalty-kick stopper Ethan Horvath for this week’s recognition.

What did you think of Corona’s effort? Who impressed you most this week?

  2. Corona deserves a look during the Gold Cup. He has had a career renaissance for a good Tijuana squad this season, and you can never have enough midfield options, especially with Jones getting older and older before our eyes.
