Trinidad & Tobago names 17-man squad ahead of USMNT qualifier

The Trinidad and Tobago national team chose 17 players for an upcoming camp ahead of World Cup qualifiers against the U.S. Men’s National Team and Costa Rica.

The players were brought into the team to start training in Boulder, Colorado, ahead of Trinidad and Tobago’s World Cup qualifier against the United States on June 8.

“The idea is to get there and try to acclimatize as quick as possible so we will be starting work there immediately,” Trinidad and Tobago coach Dennis Lawrence said in CONCACAF’s release. “Seventeen players will be traveling on Tuesday. Some will be coming back because the final squad has not been selected as yet. We expect to have the full contingent on June 4.”

By the time the full squad is named, MLS players like Kenywyne Jones (Atlanta United FC), Kevin Molino (Minnesota United FC), Cordell Cato (San Jose Earthquakes), Joevin Jones (Seattle Sounders) and Mekeil Williams (Colorado Rapids) are expected to join the team.

The USMNT kicks off against Trinidad & Tobago on June 8. T&T moves on the next week to face Costa Rica on June 13.

Here are the Soca Warriors players called up for the qualifying camp:

GOALKEEPERS: Adrian Foncette (Police FC), Marvin Phillip (unattached), Jan-Michael Williams (North East Stars)

DEFENDERS: Daneil Cyrus (North East Stars), Carlos Edwards (Central FC), Curtis Gonzales (Defence Force), Triston Hodge (W Connection), Alvin Jones (DirecTV W Connection)

  1. i am not an expert. yes, i read the article. i just like to offer my two cents. well thanks toe ball, i’ll bet he did. but in general, it seemed to me that too often if a non-mexico concaf team had on their roster an actual game changer like dwight yorke that more often than not he did not play in an actual qualifier for one reason or another, with yorke’s goal against usa being an exception.

Johnny razor, are you joking? well, i think usa fifa rankings have been favorable to the usa.

      • It’s a mathematical formula. Type of match (competitions count more than friendlies) x opponent strength x result (no points if you lose) x regional strength (average of two regions)

So again it doesn’t favor the US. For example let’s say the US upsets Mexico at the Azteca, Mexico is ranked 16. The US will receive fewer points than Iceland will get for beating 18th ranked Croatia because Iceland gets to multiply by .99 and .85. You certainly can argue that a computer is a stupid way to rank soccer but you can’t say it favors the US.

    • Yorke played against the US ten times, or 14% of his international matches, eight of those were in World Cup qualifying matches. Those ten make the most times he faced any opponent. He faced the US in qualification for ’90, ’98, ’02, ’06, and ’10 World Cups. He only scored 19 goals in 72 international matches. Why wasn’t he a force for TnT like he was in the Premier League, perhaps because TnT didn’t have Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Roy Keane, and Ryan Giggs feeding him the ball, or maybe it was a vast conspiracy involving multiple nations to promote US soccer at the detriment of their own success.

      • thanks, Johnnyrazor. glad to see that i was wrong about yorke. you always want to see both teams fielding their best players for qualifiers.

  2. None of the experts above read the article, except for Johnnyrazor. It clearly says this is a CAMP; the final (official) squad has not been selected

  3. i Don’t recall dwight yorke ever playing against the usa in a qualifier. he was always unavailable, yes? it’s so common that i think it’s done on purpose, just like fifa fast tracking usa wc bid. and just like the way they exaggerate usa’s world ranking.

    • Clearly you didn’t read the article because it clearly says the top players will be there by June and the FIFA rankings are a mathematical formula that favors European and South American teams not the US and other Concacaf teams.

    • Their MLS players aren’t available yet and they have a few European based players in northern Europe that use the Summer schedule like the US that aren’t available yet either. Levi Garcia, their best European player, plays for AZ in Holland and they are participating in the Europa League playoffs which run through Sunday.
