Heading into camp, Tim Howard was confirmed as the U.S. Men’s National Team’s No. 1, and on Saturday night, the veteran goalkeeper showed exactly why.

Howard made a number of big saves on Saturday, helping the U.S. earn a 1-1 draw in a friendly match against Venezuela. The effort earned Howard honors as SBI USMNT Man of the Match as the U.S. builds toward two vital World Cup qualifiers.

The Colorado Rapids goalkeeper provided three saves on the night, the best of which came in the first half. Howard’s fingertip stop on a Venezuela corner kick pushed the ball off the post and out, helping keep the U.S. in the match. Howard also stopped a shot from Venezuela star Salomon Rondon in the second half as the U.S. earned a 1-1 draw.

Howard’s efforts earned SBI USMNT Man of the Match recognition, beating out goalscorer Christian Pulisic and defender Jorge Villafana for Saturday’s honors.

What did you think of Howard’s performance? Which player stood out to you in Saturday’s match?

  1. Yes, Howard was MOTM. That speaks volumes about the play of the field players, none of whom had games they will want in their highlight reels years from now. (Pulisic’s goal was nice, and uncharacteristically in this game, Johnson’s pass to set him up was good, but that was pretty much it against an average opponent.)

    • Gotta take this friendly with the big picture in mind, man. Qualifying games within just a few days.
I am typically a results guy too but….

      – No injuries (knock on wood! Hope Brooks is 100%. Freaking Mr. Glass over there).
      – knocked the ball around fairly well. Def rusty. but possession was good.
      – Our D was very solid and marking seemed to be good. I like that 4 in the back.

With that said, I hate to say it but have been hopping on the MB hater train.
Every blue moon he has a nice ball but too many times coughing it up terribly in key spots on field and just brings the game down to a snail’s pace. Seeing guys like CP and Nagbe around him, it really highlights his slowness on the ball.

I think Cameron had a brilliant game. Solid and was really slick on the ball.
Knew when to step up to fill the gap that MB tends to leave in the middle.
Someone tell MB that he is not a CB.

If we had someone else right now that could effectively babysit Brooks in a CB pairing, i would vote to bring Cameron up to replace MB. (not a big fan of a Gonzo/Brooks pairing).
Maybe that is Hedges or Zimmerman in the future but not now.

Looking forward to T & T. Honestly think we run them all over the field.
Liked the starting 11. will be curious to see if Dempsey or Jozy starts.
