Jesse Gonzalez among 6 players added to USMNT roster

Bruce Arena has made his six roster changes.

Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore, Clint Dempsey, Darlington Nagbe, Tim Howard and Jesse Gonzalez were all added to the U.S. Men’s National Team Gold Cup roster on Sunday.

Brad Guzan, Sean Johnson, Alejandro Bedoya, Cristian Roldan, Kelyn Rowe and Dom Dwyer were sent back to their respective sides to make room.

This is Gonzalez’s first-ever call-up to the USMNT after his one-time change of association was approved by FIFA. The FC Dallas goalkeeper previously represented Mexico’s youth national teams.

All six players will be available for the USMNT’s quarterfinal on Wednesday against one of Jamaica, El Salvador or Honduras.

  1. Ridiculous and incomprehensible decision of Bruce
Arena, keep agudelo and pontius and draw rowe and
dwyer who are two of the best of the team in the
    competition, lousy signal

    • I think our fellow SBI posters above are more inclined to be right, than Bruce “cut” these players due to performance in favor of others.

If blame falls to anyone it’s likely more accurate to place it on Don Garber/MLS for scheduling matches during an official FIFA tournament.

  2. Bedoya was sent back because his wife is due to give birth any day now. Guzan was never expected to play the whole tournament because needs to get acclimated with Atlanta United. Dwyer is the only real surprise in my opinion, but club consideration may have been a factor in that decision.

  3. You have to think Arena is trying to give some consideration to the clubs with these releases. The only surprise I see is Bedoya who started to show some form. I suspect that those being brought in have been told they will be expected to play 90 minutes in as many games we advance. Not sure if these cuts make us a net better squad. I don’t think so.

    • Factually impossible as there are 2 keepers in the noobs. I will be curious to see if Gonzalez plays against ES or if Howard sees the tournament out and the others are in camp to serve as emergency keepers and train with the team.

    • Horvath, Gonzalez, & Steffen have now moved into the category/contention for the “Next” US Keeper….similarly to how Sean Johnson & Bill Hamid were 5 yrs ago. Would not be at all surprised to see 1 of the 3 brought to the 18 WC as the 3rd string keeper.

There is going to be an epic battle for the Keeper position in the very near future. The veterans…..Howard, Rimando, Guzan…are not going to be around much longer. The missing generation….Yarbrough, Bingham, Hamid & S. Johnson have been less than stellar/consistent. Horvath, Gonzalez, Steffen, & Cropper are all starters who are just now coming of age.

      • There could be arguably 10-15 goalkeepers ahead of cropper. He has never been even close to good enough, and is a poor man’s Guzan

  4. I thought Rowe & Dwyer performed well enough that they should have been kept in camp. Not surprised that Roldan was sent back to his club, but would have preferred if it had been McCarty.

    • I think the “cuts” were more complicated than understood. I think Johnson (didn’t play) and Roldan were sent back for suckage but I think some people like Guzan and Rowe were sent back having shown something. I think the cuts were eclectic and may not reflect a thumbs up or down. If Rowe and Dwyer are back in September this doesn’t mean what people think.
