With the international break over, several U.S. Men’s National Team stars returned to club action, but the hits kept on coming for one defensive star.
Geoff Cameron was forced out of Stoke City’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United with an injury on Saturday. After played 45 minutes, Cameron was removed at halftime with a hamstring issue, opening up some doubt just a month away from vital World Cup qualifiers.
In Germany, Bobby Wood returned to the Hamburg lineup while Fabian Johnson sat out as Timmy Chandler and Eintracht Frankfurt toppled Borussia Monchengladbach. Christian Pulisic also played a full match, but couldn’t lead Borussia Dortmund past Freiburg in a scoreless draw.
Elsewhere, Julian Green made his debut for his new club, DeAndre Yedlin returned to the Newcastle bench and Jonathan Gonzalez helped Monterrey pick up yet another win.

Brooks is injured…and wasn’t that good in his last appearance.
Gonzalez was not very good during the GC, nor was he very good against Honduras.

Get well Cameron! If healthy … he should always be one of the starting CB’s. With Brooks out … I would prefer a Besler and Cameron CB pairing.
McKennie, Gonzalez, & Williams need to be checked out. of those, I think Gonzalez is the most ready to contribute given he’s a full blown starter with a beast Monterrey team.
also, the embargo against Chandler HAS to stop. and for all those pure JK haters, maybe Chandler was negatively affected by his coaching? maybe it wasn’t just Chandler being bad because clearly he’s not. get him in the team and let’s see if Bruce can sort him out.
this team doesn’t have the luxury of being picky at RB right now. we need to build around Yedlin as the #1 and Chandler as the #2. Bruce isn’t just responsible for getting us to Russia, he’s responsible for getting a team together that can do something once there.
i think it’s a disservice to say that he is being overlooked by Arena. He would have been called in for a qualifier but was suspended for cards and the other time he said he couldn’t report because of injury, those are facts and not a sign that he is being ignored! I’m all for bringing him in too by the way because his talent is there, but performances by him have been 50/50 at best with the NT so this idea that he is the solution to RB is a overreaction in my opinion.
That’s totally fair about him not getting the call.
But I take issue with your final point. No one, and I mean no one, including my note above, says he is the answer at RB. He is depth to get us away from Zusi. Or at least he should be but people are so anti-Chandler because of the past they aren’t willing to even consider it.
To me it should be Yedlin, Chandler, & Lichaj until we see someone else step up at the club level.
Bryan, i was in no way implying that was your opinion but i have seen alot of folks make the argument that he is. Those comments tend to be born out of the league he plays in and his success the last year, all credible assumptions to make by the way, but anyone paying attention to his NT performances would tread lightly on that mentality.
There’s just no way we are going to give a first cap to a player in thees must win games coming up. If he continues to see the field and play well there is no reason he shouldn’t get a look before next summer though.
Williams is an interesting case though. Seems to tick a lot of the boxes we are needing now, but hasn’t gotten the call yet. Makes me wonder if he had any off the field/locker room issues.
that is the point! we’ve heard that excuse for years now. at some point you HAVE to pull the trigger. Usually that happens when your #1 is injured, the hopeful #2 (Lichaj) doesn’t look great, and you are stuck with a converted RB in Zusi.
He has continued to see the field for years now in the Bundesliga and it didn’t make a difference then and continues not to (granted Ronniet made a good point about Chandler + Arena era).
Regarding locker room, by all accounts, Chandler is the “jokester” of the group. So I would be surprised if there was an issue. The guy “likes/favorites” every single US Soccer post on Instagram, not typical of someone who is having locker room issues. Guess we’ll see what happens in October. But with Yedlin back, no reason Chandler shouldn’t be involved to help with depth and start getting integrated into this team.

and yeah, I agree. I don’t see it happening either and would be fine with that. But I would not be opposed to 1-2 spots going to a Gonzalez or a McKennie. Dax was brought in to provide depth and he wasn’t part of this team for awhile. He’s more experienced, but in the end he got 0 minutes. Why not give that experience to a younger player?

Weston’s now played in 2 out of 3 of Schalkes first league games.Not a lot of time to evaluate him properly from our perspective but his manager must be seeing something in practice. Having watched his highlights at the lower level what impressed me most was his ability to receive the ball off the CBs and immediately turn up field and with the pace and intent to link to the attacking line. He keeps playing moving forward rather than slowing it down and allowing the defense to settle in. Last window might have been too early but given out lack of pool depth at CM its hard to not call in a player getting Bundesliga minutes.
It looks like McKinnie is going to get minutes when they are ahead and won’t play if Schalke is down or tied.
Really impressed by McKennie: really looks like he belongs, and headed a cross the upper corner, forcing a great save from the Stuttgart ‘keeper.
I feel the same way about McKennie. He may be forcing his way into the call up conversation. He certainly seems to be able to handle the big stage.
