Weston McKennie ready to get back in action for Schalke

After missing a week of action with a thigh strain, Weston McKennie is back and ready to go for Schalke 04 when they face Mainz on Friday.

The U.S. U-20 midfielder has made five appearances for the Royal Blues this season. He’s yet to score a goal in 246 minutes of action.

Born in Texas, McKennie joined the FC Dallas academy in 2009. He turned down a homegrown contact offer last year and chose to go overseas with Schalke. He made his first team debut in May, and his first start in September, when he also signed a shiny new five year contract with the club.

    • you speak truth, Gomer. The American fan base is so quick to jump on the latest fad. I’m thrilled that Pulisic has been on a steady rise for basically 2 years, but he is due to plateau or have a bad season, like any rising star. I’m not sure that the fan base is prepared for that…Hopefully these young guys (CP, McKinnie, Wright, etc…) are given theh space to occasionally fail and grow

  1. The last few years I’ve enjoyed watching the Bundesliga more and more. With the old Fox Soccer Channel to NBCSN (who has fantastic coverage) so much was put on the PL. I’ve tried to catch as many games when Fabian Chandler Brooks AJ, and Jones pre-MLS and now with Pulisic… It’s hard to not get excited about McKennie & a few others coming through.
The BL is smart to continue to dive into the US market and I see NO reason why you would hold this kid back from bringing him into the NT

    • Fox Soccer is so B team in their coverage of the BL compared to NBCSN coverage of the EPL. Also helps that EPL is much more dramatic/compelling than the BL. Still I like watching BVB games to see what Pulisic will do.

  2. November is a FIFA date, his club won’t play any games. What he misses is training but a) he will, stay fit training with USMNT and b) it increases his profile and potential value to his club. Schalke would love to have USMNT starter on their roster.

  3. “He’s yet to score a goal in 246 minutes of action”. Given his role, I don’t think there should be a lot of concern about his not scoring a goal in fewer than 3 games-worth of minutes. The stats at ESPNFC show his season with 3 shots, 1 on goal. That seems just fine to me. It’s terrific that he is earning those minutes and getting that experience at his age.

    • I don’t know if this is sarcastic or not but these young guys need to prioritize securing a first team spot with their clubs. There’s nothing to play for till 2019 so I’d rather see him become a week in, week out starter at the age of 19-20 then pull him away from his club team for a week at a time to basically play meaningless National team games.

    • That’s right. Let’s bring back Beasley, Feilhaber, Wondo, Rimando, Suzi. et al. They all worked out really well during the qualifiers.
