One of soccer’s all-time greats is hanging up his boots for good.
Andrea Pirlo announced through his Twitter account on Monday morning that he is not only leaving New York City FC, but the game as a whole as a player.

The final stage of Pirlo’s career may not have gone as planned with New York City FC, but he did record one goal and 18 assists in 60 games played.
His final appearance for NYCFC came in a late substitute role in Sunday’s Eastern Conference semifinal second leg loss to the Columbus Crew.
The 38-year-old midfielder made 116 appearances for Italy and starred for AC Milan and Juventus during his club soccer tenure in Serie A.

He was here for the money someone was dumb enough to give him.
That was waste of money in my opinion and probably not a small amount of money either.
I agree with most of what you say, that he was there mostly for the money, and that NYCFC was dumb enough to give it to him. But he’s nowhere near the worst DP signing.
I didn’t hear that he was disruptive to the team, that he was a negative influence in the locker room. The dude wanted to experience NYC life and be paid handsomely for it. Unless he was faking injuries (I have not heard anything like that), then this is all on the club for overpaying a fading (faded?) star who couldn’t even cover the miniature field at Yankee Stadium. Pirlo did what he could on his old legs.
