USMNT to open 2018 against Bosnia and Herzegovina

The next step in the rebuilding process for the U.S. Men’s National Team program after Tuesday’s friendly in Portugal will take place at a familiar site on Jan. 28.

The USMNT will host Bosnia and Herzegovina at the StubHub Center in a match that will most likely feature domestic-based players. The game doesn’t fall during a FIFA-approved international window.

MLS players and those based in Scandinavia and Mexico are usually part of the January camp contingent that traditionally ends the month with a friendly or two.

The two teams have met once, with the USMNT pulling out a dramatic 4-3 victory on August 14, 2013 as Jozy Altidore netted a hat trick in Sarajevo.

  1. USSF continue to move at mediocre pace, it’s like Gulati wants a mediocre USNT as his legacy.

USNT should have at least three to four friendlies in JAN, with interim coach.

    • There are very few teams to play in January as all the major European and South American leagues are in session, and none of our European players are available. The MLS players who are available are returning from their offseason and are in poor form. Playing 3 or 4 friendlies in Jan would be a complete waste of time in a normal year and even more pointless this year with a lame duck coach.

      • The Vikings B or C teams, Central Americans, Puerto Rico, or B South America. The point of these games give rookies experience & test formations when a new coach take over, the new coach will have rookies with experience different style teams, regaining their form, or playing in other country.

Remember it was interim coach that defeated USNT for Confederations Cup p[layoff. USSF has stop thinking like typical hipster soccer fan.

  2. After the World Cup, several quality coaches should be fired from their respective national teams. With many more possibilities available, the federation could draw upon a rich coaches pot. I do hope they end up hiring Marcelo Bielsa or Tata Martino though.

    • Already Ancelotti is available plus the two you mention. I think they shouldn’t wait and should pick someone before the WC. While more coaches will be available later, will they want the US job? I still think Martino would be a wonderful choice. He took little Paraguay the farthest ever in their history in the 2010 World Cup, losing to eventual champ Spain 1-0 in the quarters.

    • Whoever coaches USMNT I am OK (except 2 idiots) but he must strong enough to never call old, lazy and walking “veteran” players (you guys figure out who). If I have a power to hire, Thomas Tuchel will be the new USMNT coach.

PS: Most of them (21 out of 23 in the latest) should voluntary retire from MNT to make room for young, dynamic and passionate players. Most of them caused “a biggest failure of US soccer”, do not BS any more.

  3. You have to think that the execs up at US Soccer are waiting to see who the new president will be and then put that person in charge of the next hire. Useless to do it now and not have the favor/support of the next boss of US Soccer.

  4. So is it correct to say we are looking at having a January camp with no actual coach in place? Man…. somebody at least flip JK a few bucks to get him drive up from OC and run that thing.

    • Well you can’t just shut the whole program down until a new coach is found. At least get these young guys more familiar with one another no matter who is in charge, that way once a coach is found they will know how to play with one another already and can adapt to whatever system easier.
