Reports: Six ‘change’ candidates look to join forces ahead of U.S. Soccer election

Six U.S. Soccer presidential nominees are reportedly looking to join forces to combat the status quo.

According to multiple reports, Paul Caligiuri, Steve Gans, Kyle Martino, Hope Solo, Mike Winograd, and Eric Wynalda met on Thursday night to discuss a strategy to defeat the two candidates seen as favorites, Kathy Carter and Carlos Cordeiro. The reported motivation for the meeting stems from the election process, which gives just 10 minutes to delegates to switch votes between rounds.

The group prepared a draft of a statement, calling for voters to get behind them over the two frontrunners.

However, according to ESPN, tensions did rise while the draft was being written. The group reportedly disagrees over whether the top vote getter in the first round among the group would have the rest throw support behind them in the ensuing rounds.

On Thursday, reports surfaced revealing that the NWSL was set to support Kathy Carter, joining MLS in throwing their votes behind the SUM executive.

  1. if this were a real election, there would be at least one candidate representing the nasl, talking about things from their equally valid point of view. since that isn’t the case by design (three letters of recommendation needed from current board) i guess i’m just assuming this whole election is basically a kind of entertainment for the fans before the next president puts the sword to the nasl.

  2. Are any of these candidates really that qualified? Most of us would like to see change, but the total inexperience of most of the “change” candidates worries me. Seeing the strategic ineptitude on display during these campaigns, culminating in this way-too-late attempt to consolidate support- tells me none of these guys were really up to the task in the first place.

Sadly, I think Carter and perhaps Cordeiro are the only candidates who can execute on whatever strategy they have. If guys like Wynalda and Martino are truly serious, I’d like to see them go get some relevant management experience and education for a few years. A nationwide program with thousands of participants and stakeholders (not to mention a 9 figure budget) is not something anybody can effectively manage based on intuition or a resume of punditry.

    • Thank you! I have had this discussion a lot over the past month. The change candidates are weak and I WANT change. However, I will not elect irresponsibility for the sake of change. Tgat us utter stupidity. Martino is a joke and Wynalda has some administrative experience but not enough

      • Administrative experience? in what ? reading the sport news in fox? you must be kidding. ” angry: Eric Wynalda is an illiterate, period. He doesn’t even a high school diploma.

    • Kathy Carter will win on the first ballot anyway.
If you think any of the guys with “power” (i.e.expense accounts) would risk pissing off the next president then your are crazy.

  3. There are two choices: on that’s pretty much guaranteed to keep things the same one that promises change. Even if change is minimal under the later, as it often is with this type of organizations, it’s change nonetheless. Keeping the status quo would be a huge wasted opportunity to move the system to the next level.
BTW: lack of athleticism has never been a problem for the USNT. Too many athletes and not enough footballers is.

    • What’s wrong with Rob ? He has started making logical, reasonable and even, dare I say it, intelligent comments lately. What happened to the Mexican troll we used to love to disparage?

      • I know right. Maybe he’s a true gent and not rubbing how dysfunctional USSoccer really is now that we haven’t qualified therefore taking pity on us all, which I appreciate can’t deal with trolling the pain of not qualifying at least for another year. Although even in older postings you could always hear that bit of truth thru the typical Rob sarcasm and done in a very succinct way too. I don’t think readers got his sarcasm in the past.

  4. Was THAT the whole document in the picture? IF so, thanks for the specifics on CHANGE!

It is easy to yell change, every candidate with unhappy voters has done so for all of time.
It is hard to come up with plans to solve the athletes being passed by in a pay to play system.

It is easy to yell Pro/Rel in a room of guys who hate MLS.
It will be impossible to make that happen and/or succeed.

it is easy and fun to say we need to win the World Cup
it is hard to get a great athlete to pass up NBA/NFL path
where guys are signing contracts of $25 million a year.

    • Agreeeed. Is anyone proposing the status quo? No. These “change” candidates remind me of the kids running for Elementary school class President. Pizza for lunch every day, longer recess and no more homework!!!

    • Well said. This is borderline embarrassing. You’d think at some point these guys would realize they have zero chance of winning if 6 of them are running against a single establishment candidate. Sounds like maybe Wynalda did realize this and ran for the hills.

      • I feel if they are truly wanting someone else in office they would all work together and back one candidate. The “draft statement” had to be watered down and generalized because of the diversity among the 6. I don’t fault them for that.

    • It doesn’t matter if the office is dog catcher, elementary school president, or city council, if you have 6 candidates all running for the same office, getting agreement on anything is nearly miraculous. It’s not just politics, it’s human nature.

    • Every time some dum dum tells me, what if LeBron or LT played soccer, I go into, o, my you are clueless, aren’t you mode.
Don’t want to go ad hominem, but USMNT and MLS are infested with athletes with a footballing IQ of squirrel…shocking first touch (Jozy, anyone), embarrassing tactical awareness on and off the ball…
Because, surely, Messi, Iniesta, Maradona, Modric are NFL level athletes…
I don’t want to say, you folks are clueless, but, my god, you are…
Go chase your athletes, the future is bright…more kicking and running, more anti-football…smh…
