Good morning from Florida

Hello all. I’m coming to you from sunny Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The first day of the MLS Player Combine is set to begin in an hour and we should get to see some serious talent on display.

SBI will provide you with updates on the draft throughout the weekend so stay tuned. The first update of the date involves the latest inclusion to the Combine and Generation adidas class. Columbus-based writer Rich Fidler has informed SBI that Ohio State winger Roger Espinoza has signed with MLS and Generation adidas. According to a league source, Espinoza completed his deal earlier in the week and is already in Florida and will take part in today’s Combine. The speedy flank player starred in the College Cup final and has a good chance of playing his way into the first round of the MLS Draft with a good showing this weekend.

I’m off to Lockhart Stadium. If you are anywhere near Ft. Lauderdale you might want to head over to see the next generation of MLS talent.

Stay tuned.

  1. agreed, the draft doesn’t produce a great percentage of impact players or even players that stick around for a solid career. but i think it has the opportunity to improve by better identifying talent.

the reason the combine is important to improving the draft is b/c college soccer gets close to zero coverage. such little coverage makes it hard to evaluate players – games aren’t televised, game reports provide little analysis, game reports are usually written by unqualified analyzers of the game. if we can improve those areas and get the right players in the combine to measure their skills, the percentage of quality players may increase.

i like the draft and enjoy the coverage. please keep it coming.

  2. “The game of soccer will continue to give 14 players the opportunity to see playing time during any one game. That eliminates the possibility of the influx of a large number of players on to a team in a given year.”

    Huh??

  3. I like the draft keep the reports coming. It is good to see the college game getting some more coverage this year. I have no problem with professional athletes having the opportunity to get a college education. The draft is an inexact science in all sports in this country.

I think having various avenues for athletes to improve their skill sets is a plus not a minus.

  4. Next generation of MLS talent?

More like next generation of MLS dev roster players and a couple guys that may be something. Seriosuly when can we just get rid of college players drafts. Maybe 5 players out of 150 are even competant players. These youth systems really need to come on quickly.
