Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

The European transfer window came and went and Michael Bradley stayed put. Heerenveen would have taken the cash, but the Dutch club will gladly take Bradley’s goal production.

The U.S. national team midfielder scored his 16th goal in all competitions and 12th league goal, and helped set up two other goals for good measure in Heerenveen’s 7-0 dismantling of Vitesse Arnhem.

While Bradley delivered the best individual performance, Clint Dempsey and the boys at Fulham came through with a desperately-needed three points. Brian McBride and Kasey Keller returned from injuries to make the bench, with McBride taking the field for 20 minutes.

Here is how all the Americans in Europe’s top flight did this past weekend:

ENGLAND

Tim Howard started, played 90 minutes, drew a yellow card and made four saves in Everton’s 0-0 tie vs. Blackburn on Saturday.

Brad Friedel started, played 90 minutes and made five saves for Blackburn.

Marcus Hahnemann started, played 90 minutes and made three saves (including a penalty kick save) in Reading’s 2-0 loss to Bolton on Saturday.

Bobby Convey did not dress for Reading.

Jonathan Spector dressed but did not play in West Ham United’s 1-0 loss to Wigan on Saturday.

Clint Dempsey started and played 79 minutes in Fulham’s 2-1 win against Fulham on Sunday.

Brian McBride came of the bench and played 20 minutes for Fulham.

Carlos Bocanegra dressed but did not play for Fulham.

Kasey Keller dressed but did not play for Fulham.

GERMANY

Steve Cherundolo started and played 90 minutes in Hannover 96’s 1-1 tie vs. Hamburg on Saturday.

Gregg Berhalter started and played 90 minutes in 1860 Munich’s 3-0 loss to FC Augsburg on Sunday.

Josh Wolff came off the bench and played 15 minutes for 1860 Munich.

HOLLAND

Michael Bradley scored his ninth goal in nine games and assisted on two other goals to help Heerenveen post a 7-0 thrashing of Vitesse Arnhem on Saturday.

PORTUGAL

Freddy Adu dressed but did not start in Benfica’s 0-0 tie vs. Nacional de Madeira.

BELGIUM

Oguchi Onyewu started and played 90 minutes in Standard Liege’s 0-0 tie vs. Cercle Brugge KSV on Sunday.

SPAIN

Giuseppe Rossi started, played 70 minutes and scored a penalty kick goal in Villarreal’s 1-1 tie against Mallorca on Sunday.

  1. MemRook:

Your post about being pissed off because of Ives’ posting of Giuseppe Rossi in this section offends me and I take it very seriously!

I thought YOU were the one who took posts too seriously?

Don’t worry. I don’t think Ives could ever be mad at you! (Kissing noises)

    P.S.
Please don’t take this post too seriously!

  2. You know, the Seth Stammler photo on MetroFanatic *does* look *alot* like Gary Busey on those Giuseppe Franco commercials. It’s wierd …

  3. Aw geez, I’m afraid someone might actually take me too seriously …

So for the record, I am NOT pissed off about Ives’ inclusion of Rossi. I was making a joke about the terrible Procede commercials.

You never know who takes who seriously these days.

  4. The only thing that pisses me off about Ives’ Giuseppe updates is that it reminds me of those god-awful commercials on GolTV and FSC, featuring Giuseppe Franco and his Procede wonder hair product. It makes me cringe.

  5. I think it says “Americans Abroad,” not “National Teamers Abroad…”

Does 2 lines of print really hurt you guys that much? Sheesh…

  6. hi ives,

I’ve recently read that Pat Noonan is now on a Norwegian team: Aalesunds FK. I haven’t seen any announcement anywhere about the transfer, any news on this? Did Adin Brown being the keeper there have something to do with it? How do you think this will affect his MNT chances (seems positive right now)?

  7. I know I’m just adding fuel to the fire, but the title of this post isn’t US National Team members abroad… if he’s American, and he’s playing abroad, then I think he can fall under this heading. It’s not quite the same thing, but I’m sure are Americans playing abroad that will never play for the national team, or there will be someday… does this mean they should never be covered under a list like this?

  8. Ives, please keep winding everyone up with the Rossi postings. It’s like shooting fish in a barrel.

It’s now become my favorite part of the “Americans” Abroad update. Thanks.

Rossi was born in Jersey, leave Ives (the American Voice) alone.

  10. I’m with the crew that says unless Rossi is playing for the Nats (Which he isn’t) you don’t need to track him on this page

  11. Please stop reporting on Rossi in the Americans Abroad section. We have already established ad nauseum that Rossi is not American.

  12. I’d be nice to see a few more of Fulham’s Americans on the field vs the bench.

Also, I love to see the emergence of Mario Balotelli at Inter. Although Rossi is playing well, it would be sweet to see him never play for Italy’s national team because of play of people like Mario.

  13. Ives, I read your articles every day, but man, you need to stop listing Rossi on your list of players abroad. Yes he was born here, but if a guys refuses to play for the U.S National Team, then he does not deserve any attention from us. I am not even from here and I think my name would be worth more on your list then Rossi. You could list me as Ronald Lucena, WISL, Bethesda F.C. Played 90 minutes and scored 2 goals. Thanks Ives.

  14. “. . . Fulham’s 2-1 win against Fulham on Sunday.”

How did Fulham beat Fulham? They are regularly beating themselves but I thought it was only in the figurative sense! ;D

  15. Arguez’s turnover that led to goal was in his own attacking third…70+yards from his own goal. It’s hard for me to blame him for that goal.

He’s another young YA I’m looking forward to following int he coming years!

  16. Supposedly Arguez wasn’t too great, he got dispossesed and it led to the third goal. HOWEVER, he was the first sub in, and many assumed they were going to ease him along thru the reserves before he could even sniff first team action.

PS. He was playing a deep center half, right infront of the defense…. yet another defensive midfielder (although i’m ready to take baby bradley out of that category!)

  17. Looks like Bryan Arguez was subbed in at he 63rd minute for Hertha Berlin in their 0-3 loss to Frankfurt.
Anyone know how the kid performed?
