Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

The European transfer window came and went and Michael Bradley stayed put. Heerenveen would have taken the cash, but the Dutch club will gladly take Bradley’s goal production.

The U.S. national team midfielder scored his 16th goal in all competitions and 12th league goal, and helped set up two other goals for good measure in Heerenveen’s 7-0 dismantling of Vitesse Arnhem.

While Bradley delivered the best individual performance, Clint Dempsey and the boys at Fulham came through with a desperately-needed three points. Brian McBride and Kasey Keller returned from injuries to make the bench, with McBride taking the field for 20 minutes.

Here is how all the Americans in Europe’s top flight did this past weekend:

ENGLAND

Tim Howard started, played 90 minutes, drew a yellow card and made four saves in Everton’s 0-0 tie vs. Blackburn on Saturday.

Brad Friedel started, played 90 minutes and made five saves for Blackburn.

Marcus Hahnemann started, played 90 minutes and made three saves (including a penalty kick save) in Reading’s 2-0 loss to Bolton on Saturday.

Bobby Convey did not dress for Reading.

Jonathan Spector dressed but did not play in West Ham United’s 1-0 loss to Wigan on Saturday.

Clint Dempsey started and played 79 minutes in Fulham’s 2-1 win against Fulham on Sunday.

Brian McBride came of the bench and played 20 minutes for Fulham.

Carlos Bocanegra dressed but did not play for Fulham.

Kasey Keller dressed but did not play for Fulham.

GERMANY

Steve Cherundolo started and played 90 minutes in Hannover 96’s 1-1 tie vs. Hamburg on Saturday.

Gregg Berhalter started and played 90 minutes in 1860 Munich’s 3-0 loss to FC Augsburg on Sunday.

Josh Wolff came off the bench and played 15 minutes for 1860 Munich.

HOLLAND

Michael Bradley scored his ninth goal in nine games and assisted on two other goals to help Heerenveen post a 7-0 thrashing of Vitesse Arnhem on Saturday.

PORTUGAL

Freddy Adu dressed but did not start in Benfica’s 0-0 tie vs. Nacional de Madeira.

BELGIUM

Oguchi Onyewu started and played 90 minutes in Standard Liege’s 0-0 tie vs. Cercle Brugge KSV on Sunday.

SPAIN

Giuseppe Rossi started, played 70 minutes and scored a penalty kick goal in Villarreal’s 1-1 tie against Mallorca on Sunday.
