Mathis works his magic in Greece

Clint Mathis is at it again.

In just his second appearance for Greek club Ergotelis, Mathis worked the magic that has become his trademark whenever he first joins a new team. Mathis capped a two-goal comeback by the Greek bottom dwellars with a 90th-minute equalizer to help Ergotelis salvage a 2-2 tie against Apallon Kalamarias on Sunday.

Mathis came on as a 76th minute substitute and needed just 14 minutes to score for his new club. He latched on to a failed clearance and volleyed home the equalizer from 23 yards out. Here is a video clip of the goal:

Ergotelis is still in last place in the Greek Super League.

  1. Hey Jeremy suck a big one pal.

Crap goal, you tard he volleyed the ball with his LEFT foot from 20 yards out, he’s right footed. How many players do you ever see strike a volley from distance with their weak foot that ends up on frame.

    Take your Mathis hatin’ elsewhere.

  2. Very nice goal.

Mathis is a puzzle to me. In the few times I’ve seen him play, he seems like he does have some on-the-ball talent and ability to finish above the MLS level. Both are still fairly rare qualities among U.S. players. Yet, Mathis never quite materialized into a great player he could have been. Is it just about not being able to stay in shape?

  3. everytime he does something well it just frustrates me. One of the most talented players ever to put on a us jersey… At the same time he is my favorite us player ever, and i respect the fact that he does it the way he wants, I just hope he doesn’t have any regrets

  4. I made the National team comment…

No chance I’d want to see Clint on the 2010 World Cup team…but if he’s fit, and you don’t think he’s of the same (or better quality) of Ramiro Corrales, Drew Moor, Pat Noonan types, then I don’t know what you are smoking.

If those slobs can make the team, Clint easily could (again, if he’s truly fit, last year he wasn’t close to fit)

  5. Did someone say national team? Let’s hope we have better options than that. All the 20 yo kids running around is pretty exciting- I don’t want to see an overweight guy for the previous soccer generation in the mix. Certainly he has a nose for the goal, but I did not think he was a net positive for rbny last year.

What do you mean? He came on as a substitute for the last place team in the Greek first division…………..and then scored a goal.

    He’s back baby!

  7. Argh, why can’t Mathis stay interested? Watching his first half of the season with NY last year was fantastic. I guess he just can’t stay motivated, you gotta have the drive along with the talent.

  8. Did some one say magic?

    Clint Mathic magic
    He wears a magic hat
When asked to play for Ergotelis,
    He said i’d fancy that.
He’ll score with his left foot
    He’ll score with his right,
And when he plays Apallon Kalamarias
    He’ll score all f*cking night.

  9. Haha, thats acutally a fair point. Mathis looked more fit in the pictures of his signing, I hope he makes a return to the National Team (if he’s fit and interested)

  10. Nobody is surprised by Bradley’s goals anymore. People may actually be surprised to learn that Mathis scored.

Just kidding, Bradley will be featured in Americans Abroad:Weekend Rewind.
