CONCACAF in Europe: Weekend Rewind

Kenwynjonespalacios_ap

And the list keeps growing.

Good afternoon folks. Welcome to the latest installment of CONCACAF players in Europe, our weekly recap of how the region’s best players did in Europe’s best leagues. Last week was the first installment and, thanks to some helpful readers, I have been able to expand the list.

The main goal of this feature is to educate you all on the exploits of the region’s best players. Hopefully, by following this for the next weeks and months, you will be fully versed in who CONCACAF’s top players are when World Cup qualifying roles around. I will admit to thinking to myself, "this guy plays in Europe?" while watching the CONCACAF Gold Cup in years past.

You know there are a lot of CONCACAF players in Europe, at least more than ever before, when I can dig up a fresh photo of two CONCACAF products squaring off in a top European league and NEITHER is American or Mexican. For those of you who don’t know, that is T&T’s Kenwyne Jones and Honduras’ Wilson Palacios doing battle in EPL action last weekend.

Here is how CONCACAF’s top players did in Europe’s top flight this weekend. Enjoy:

Please feel free to add other CONCACAF players to this list in the comments section, preferably players from European first divisions and the second divisions of England, Italy, Germany and Spain. You can add other players from other divisions but I won’t be including them in the weekly roundup because that would take WAY too much time.

And finally, yes, I realize that Jonathan DeGuzman is planning to play for Holland rather than Canada, but I believe there are plenty of people who want to know how he is doing so I will keep him on there.

Share your thoughts on how these players did below.

  1. Irishapple21 ..Neither Jozy playing for US & Rossi playing for Italy are traitor to their country … A player loyalty is to himself not necessary a country or Team

  2. You guys calling Jono De Guzman the G. Rossi of Canada need to remember that Canada lost Owen Hargreaves to England, too.

So that’s two world class players subtracted from what would be a very scary Canadian midfield if all was right in the world.

  3. Jozy is not a traitor to Haiti for playing for the USMNT, because Jozy is a born and bred Jersey boy. He was born and raised in America so his loyalty is to America, as it should be. That makes Jozy different that Traitor Rossi who was born and bred a Jersey boy but plays for Italy.

  4. Hey kpugs. What do you have against Iain Hume. Are you mad because he scored against the USA and made their defence look silly in the Gold Cup, or are you just jealous of his life?

  5. In today’s game Grenada’s Jason Roberts came on for Blackburn in the 77th minute replacing Benni McCarthy. He did not score in Blackburn’s 2-0 loss to Arsenal.

  6. Two T&T Players at Swansea City (1rst Place English League 1):
-Jason Scotland: 13 goals this year, World Cup Veteran, played in Scotland previously sparking a popular Scotland’s going to the World Cup parody on Scottish television.
-Denis Lawerence: 2 goals this season, World Cup Veteran, scored the game winning goal against Bahrain that sent T&T to the World Cup.

-Kevin Austin also plays for Swansea and has been capped once for T&T.

  7. I know that MLS is not in Europe, but I wanted to know if Ives will be updating us since it’s so close to home about players that we may want to keep an eye on throughout the season. Just wanted to clarify my previous question. Thanks!

  9. Hey Ives you forgot Josh Simpson (Canada) who plays for the same teams as Patrice Bernier – Kaiserslautern

David Edgar is regularly on the bench for Newcastle

Asmir Begovic has been on the bench a few times for Portsmouth this year.

Although none of them were dressed this week you should keep an eye out for them.

  10. If we are calling people traitor .. My has well call Josmer Altidore a traitor .. He born in United States to Haitian Parents (His Mother is from Au Cayes & Father is Port-Au-Prince Haiti) …

Gol .. You miss the point of the article, the article is not stupid … Article is about naming CONCACAF Players Playing in Europe .. if the Author miss a Country (Haiti) – its because He may not know … its for us has Haitian to bring it to his attention by posting a comment …

Scott Ives … Steph (bana2166) in Haitian Community got made love for you .. Keep up the good work ..

  11. What I find interesting about this list is the majority of Canadians are starting for their respective clubs.

    Same with the Mexicans.

Who are the regular starters on the Yanks Abroad list?

    -Dempsey
    -Dolo
    -Berhalter

These guys have been starting consistently on their teams.

    Oh…yes goalkeepers:

    -Friedel
    -Howard
    -Hahneman

For the most part, our field players just don’t seem to have the impact of first team rosters that either Canadian or Mexican players do.

    Good list Ives.

  12. Speaking of traitor, Patrice Bernier plays for Canada instead of his native land HAITI.
We went to school together in HAITI.
BACKSTABER. He’s not that good anyway.

That is a hard choice. I don’t know which FA is more screwed up. Guams or the PI. But I guess being a G. Rossi for anybody is better than not playing! 😉

  14. What did I say?
    The G. Rossi of Canada.
    Just too funny.
I think I should play for the Philippines National team.
But then again, I might be called the G. Rossi of Guam.

  15. nicholas beat me to it. John DeGuzman has chosen to play for the dutch.

You can consider him a double traitor since he also had a chance to play for the Philippines.
