Saturday in Europe: Arsenal wins again, Man U ties, Real Madrid loses

Emmanuel Adebayor’s brace lifted Arsenal to a 3-1 win at Manchester City to move into first place in the English Premier League.

Man U fell two points back after needing a late Carlos Tevez goal to gain a single point against Tottenham in a 1-1 tie.

Chelsea fell six points behind Arsenal after settling for a 1-1 tie against Portsmouth. Nicolas Anelka netted for the Blues but new Portsmouth striker Jermaine DeFoe equalized.

The most shocking result came from Spain, where Almeria dropped Real Madrid, 2-0, to deliver a lifeline chasers Barcelona and Espanyol.

There was plenty other action, including the scoreless draw between Tim Howard’s Everton and Brad Friedel’s Blackburn, as well as Michael Bradley scoring his 12th league goal in Heerenveen’s 7-0 thrashing of Vitesse Arnhem.

  1. I love you, Almeria! 🙂

Michael Bradley is a beast. 4 on the league table as a CM is ridiculous. He very well might be the first US Superstar once he’s at a club that people give an ‘F’ about. (Sorry Heerenveen fans–I’m not an Eredivisie hater, just know how most snobs think)
I just hope daddy lets him play like he does for club rather than having him sit back so much. We need that extra attacking flair.

I generally agree with your posts, but I disagree on the Spurs – Man U game. I thought it was a good game. Spurs defense was active and smart. They were up to the challenge of running down Man U’s chances. Spurs also had some attractive attacks. I think they ran out of legs late, which prevented them from getting the second goal.

All in all, I thought it was an entertaining game and that Spurs is pretty close to being a good side. (What ugliness there was came from some cynical fouls and dives from Man U, in my opinion.)

  3. Couple of things. It is Arsenal or Man U for the EPL.

If Michael Bradley keeps scoring we should play him up front for the USMNT (Just Kidding) but maybe he gets forward a little more.

I really like the roster and if Bob plays the players based true positions then we should se something like this up front. What you guys think?

  4. Not so great that the Toffeemen couldn’t take advantage of what else has gone on in this league today. Lost a huge chance to gain on some points.

  5. Very, very solid squad for the U.S. I’m sure we’ll all wait for Ives’ post to unload our comments. But I really like who Bradley has called in.

  6. Arsenal fans SHOULD feel lucky. I watched both matches, Arsenal didn’t play all that well, and Man United played terribly.

Arsenal weren’t terrible…they played mediocre football but they took their chances, which is all you really need to do to pull off a result.

Spurs/United was an ugly match. United had the possession but few decent shots, whereas Spurs seemed content with their one goal and that cost them, along with Keane’s terrible finish after Berbatov set him up one on one with Vandersar.

  7. I’m surprised at the ManU result. Arsenal fans like myself should consider ourselves lucky that they dropped points to Tottenham. Portsmouth played really well in the game that I saw – DeFoe looked really dangerous. I really think he should be more of an option for England.
