Emmanuel Adebayor’s brace lifted Arsenal to a 3-1 win at Manchester City to move into first place in the English Premier League.

Man U fell two points back after needing a late Carlos Tevez goal to gain a single point against Tottenham in a 1-1 tie.

Chelsea fell six points behind Arsenal after settling for a 1-1 tie against Portsmouth. Nicolas Anelka netted for the Blues but new Portsmouth striker Jermaine DeFoe equalized.

The most shocking result came from Spain, where Almeria dropped Real Madrid, 2-0, to deliver a lifeline chasers Barcelona and Espanyol.

There was plenty other action, including the scoreless draw between Tim Howard’s Everton and Brad Friedel’s Blackburn, as well as Michael Bradley scoring his 12th league goal in Heerenveen’s 7-0 thrashing of Vitesse Arnhem.
