Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

Good morning all. We’re halfway through the weekend and today’s slate of soccer matches should offer up some pretty good entertainment.

Not as much as Saturday though. Between Manchester United’s thrashing of Arsenal, Barnsley’s shock upset of Liverpool and Real Madrid’s surprise loss, there was plenty to leave you thanking the soccer gods that you have a full cable package.

If you are going to watch matches today then feel free to share your thoughts on the action at the bottom of this post. Whether some play-by-play or just your opinion on a match, share your thoughts below.

  1. Ives, any update on Matt Kassel? Obviously he’s not with the senior team in California — because he’s scoring for the academy team in Frisco, TX:

Will the senior Red Bulls team promote any kids from the academy this year? (Kassel, Exantus and Hines all played in the academy match in Frisco)

  2. My apologies to anyone who’s acquired a soft spot for Ergotelis since their acquisition of Clint Mathis, but excuse me while I cheer for Olympiakos, who beat them 1-0 yesterday (don’t mind me, I only just found out). (Mr. Mathis, for the record, came on in the 79th for Pashalis Melissas, but it seems he could only offer so much aid.)

And kpugs, I think the Arsenal types are mostly hiding their faces in embarrassment. I’m cringing a little myself and I don’t even qualify as a proper supporter.

Freddy was subbed off due to injury. It looked like his back. No official word yet.

  4. Great battle at the Velodrome. At halftime Marseille leads 2-1. Rothen scored for PSG on a penalty… the foul (if there was one) was definitely outside the box but the ref did not consult the linesman. Then 2 great goals for the home side on a header off a free kick at the edge of the box by Taiwo (who also drew the foul) and a counter from the top of the box by Niang.

Hoping for more home goals in the 2nd half.

  7. I’m waiting or the Hannover-Bayern game. Looking forward to see how Dolo deals with some top class strikers in Klose and Toni. Also hoping to see Zizzo on the bench and who knows, maybe even make an emergency appearence

  8. My peeps are late so I’m starting the day with some Genoa – Sampdoria (is that a silent ‘d’?). Starting the 2nd half, Sampdoria really really should be up 1 – 0, except they seem more interested in drawing fouls than scoring (see 1st half 1 on 1 break with goalie).

I didn’t know crap about either team, but I’m enjoying the work of Cassano. His name was psuedo-familiar, but this is the first time I’ve really watched him do his thing. Adds to the “good year for Serie A” feeling.

Still, to paraphrase Mark Knopfler, I want my GolTV. Sigh.
