Soccer Saturday (Your running commentary)

Good morning all. There are plenty of quality European matches today on TV, from Barcelona-Atletico Madrid to AC Milan-Lazio. There is also the death march match between Manchester United and Fulham. Can you smell an upset? Nah, me either.

If you will be watching the action, and you’re going to be near your computer, then share your thoughts below. Try to keep the arguments short folks (I’m betting good money a debate regarding Fulham pops up).

Enjoy the action.

  1. Damn Johnny, you were all over this comments board. I told you about sopcast so you can thank me for that. Jozy Altidore is reportedly recieving interest from Chelsea and United. That could be your dream come true Johnny.

  2. Its a tough day to be a Fulham fan. Can a year in the CCC build their confidence? Can they come right back up? For the sake of TEAM AMERICA i hope so. Dempsey is probably the only one with a shot at another Prem club right now but I think he stays with Fulham in the Segunda next year.

  3. Was a bit annoyed by GolTV’s choice to run a “simulcast” of the Madrid and Barca games. On the other hand, thank God for Robinho’s return. Gives me some hope for CL.

  4. Yes I’m excited for Tim Howard and I’ll be supporting the toffees. But I want to see field players on good teams not just goal keepers. Maybe Michael Bradley can get transfered to a good team and then there will be two.

I agree with the other Jon, EJ was timid at times but at least he was involved, and he showed some improvemnt from the first half. It’s still early in his prem life so hopefully he can build on this.

Fulham is now a full 6 points from saftey and I am sad.

You were wrong this time. No real long arguments about Fulham. Could it be there is not much left to argue? (Sorry Johnny!)

  6. it was good to see EJ out there, but he really looked timid. when he actually did take a shot, it was no where near the goal. he needs to be a lot more agressive.

johnny, i think the closest thing we have to a yank playing for a good team in europe is tim howard in everton, they are a really good team. not quite on par with man u and chelsea, but pretty close to them.

  7. Seems my prediction at 1042 above was dead-on: Newcastle let Blackburn leave St James’ Park with the points following a bad, BAD last-minute goal. It was a nice volley, but the defense had apparently already adjourned for tea.

  9. Which has the better odds for the last 10 or so minutes of the Derby game

    a – a goal being scored
b – all of derby’s players getting a yellow card (5 players have already been booked)

  10. I have a dream. I dream of a day when Americans who play football abroad play on teams that are not horrible struggling at the bottom of the table. I dream of a day in which american footballers can walk hand in hand with some of the games best teams. I dream of a time when the lastest yanks abroad news stories are about contending for titles and not surviving relegation. I have a dream…

  11. The scoring machine John O’Shea scores…No an own goal by Davies! My god. I spent all moring looking for a free live stream of this game and this is what I get. Davies seriously must have money on this game. He made no effort to redirect that ball anywhere but into his own net. Dempsey is probably happy not to be in this game.

EJ just got wacked in the face by Wes Brown. Welcome to the Prem.

  12. No Dempsey makes no sense! Why is EJ playing in MID? This team really looks dead in the water! EJ Scores…10 seconds after offside is called!

  13. Dempsey is the man, but he hasn’t scored in quite a while. So the fact that he is Fulham’s leading scorer says more about Fulham’s lack of goal production than it says about Dempsey’s recent form.

Remember I love the USMNT and Dempsey is the man, just some honest constructive criticism.

  14. I’m also curious why Dempsey couldn’t make the Fulham bench. Seems like a team in need of goals wouldn’t bench their leading scorer.

And what are the odds Newcastle will allow at least one comic goal in the 2d half? Likely either in the first or last 10 minutes of the second 45. Just seems to be tradition at this point.

  15. Anyone else seeing the same old Eddie Johnson? There have already been a couple cases where he shows his timid nature and a lack of agression to get after the ball and make something happen, most notably when he refrained from pursuing a ball that had fallen in a dangerous area of the ManUre penalty area…

  16. Does anyone know why Dempsey didn’t even make the bench? (By the way, I’ve got an Ann Coulter banner on SBI that is totally ruining my morning. Can we get a few more comments so I can scroll down and not have to see this pathetic excuse for a human being).

  17. Looks like the Fulham game is a joke to Manchester, they don’t even have Ronaldo playing. And from gamecast it looks like it is pretty brutal and might get up to 5-0.

  18. Interesting lineups for the yanks this morning: Dempsey not dressed but McBride and Johnson starting! Boca and Keller on bench. Convey not named to Reading side which mixed it up in the back. Lewis starting and Benny on the bench in the Derby game!

  19. Maaaan, all this Fulham pessimism is getting on my nerves. This is going to be a brutal morning. I feel like I’m in high school and got challenged to a fight by the captain of the football team and everyone around me is debating about how I’m going to get my arse kicked. :'(
