Super Sunday: Man U thrashes Liverpool, Chelsea downs Arsenal

Manchester United increased its lead in the English Premier League to five points with its 3-0 whipping of Liverpool on Sunday.

Nani scored a goal and delivered an assist while Cristiano Ronaldo added another goal as Liverpool struggled to cope with being a man down after Javier Mascherano was issued a second yellow for dissent.

Man U’s lead grew and the team chasing them in second place has changed. Chelsea leapfrogged Arsenal in the standings after coming back from a goal down to post a 2-1 victory against the Gunners at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Didier Drogba’s two goals were the difference as Arsenal fell to third place, six points behind Man U.

As for Liverpool, the Reds are now just two points ahead of Everton for fourth place in the EPL.

Can Chelsea catch Man U for the EPL title? Arsenal appears to be out of the race, six points adrift and looking out of form in league play. Can the Blues, which still play host to Manchester United later in the season, make up the five-point gap? Is Man U just playing too well to expect them to stumble? Share your thoughts below.

  1. “Um, because people like to root for underdogs? Sure you can root for United, and for the Yankees and the Cowboys. But why? Where’s the fun in that? Do you root for the house in blackjack too?”

Well, as much as we could say we would like to see a Tottenham, Aston Villa or Everton to win the BPL, that just isnt realistic at this point in the season. So the question isn’t “Is it sad that Man U will win over all possible teams?”, but “Is it sad that Man U will win it over Chelsea and Arsenal?”. I dont see how Man U is more hateable than the other 2. People will have their own opinions: (Man U too many premiership titles, Chelsea’s Billions or Aresenal’s lack of any English players)

I have a local MLS team that I REALLY root for no matter the circumstances, so when I watch “better” football, I can make up my temporary Euro rooting interests as it goes along. (if you make the assumption that some do that you cant just watch without ANY bias) maybe that is where the other poster is coming from. In that case, I dont see Man U as necesarily being a worse choice than the rest of the usual suspects.

  2. While I believe Ronaldo is the best in the world right now (and so is his team), I simply loved Drogba’s performance yesterday. How many long balls did he control yesterday? Wenger rather smugly claimed that all Chelsea had was the long ball. Since it worked nine times out of ten, it seems like Chelsea had a good thing going.

    Awesome football game, though.

  4. Of course they can still be caught. One loss and the game at the bridge looks massive.

Expect Chelsea not to stumble, because Cole, Terry, Carvolho(sp), and Lampard will intimidate each and every ref into making games go Chelsea’s way.

  5. Ben, very well put.

I’m not partial to any particular team (though I’m really pulling for Fulham to avoid relegation), but it’s very difficult to have anything but admiration for United’s current squad. That is, unless someone roots for another team in England, like you said.

  6. United will win. Cristiano is very much on from and is the best player in the world at this time. Unless he stumbles don’t expect Man U to fall. I see them winning the Champions League. THey have to be the most feared club in the game right now.

  7. How is that sad? Man U is what every team in England should aspire to be. Would you prefer Arsenal’s no-Englishmen, all-poor sports side? Or how about Chelski attempting to buy silverware now that they’ve lost Mourinho?

Man U has the most talented side in the Premiership with a mixture of youth and experience that plays attacking football with a backbone of British players. Man U has a history of legendary players with intriguing personalities like Edwards, Charlton, Best, Cantona, Keane, Beckham, and the like. I don’t know how people hate United unless they grew up in England following local teams.
