Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Brad_friedel_ap

It was a rough weekend for Americans in England. of the 12 currently playing in the English Premier League, none of them tasted victory last weekend and only Brad Friedel’s heroics against Manchester United kept his Blackburn from facing defeat.

There was better news elsewhere, from Oguchi Onyewu’s Standard Liege clinching the Belgian Jupiler League title to Michael Bradley’s Heerenveen clinching a Champions League playoff spot with its own victory.

Jeremiah White produced the lone goal of the weekend for Americans in Europe’s top flight, scoring in AGF Aarhus’ 3-1 win vs. Lyngby on Sunday.

This week’s edition of American’s Abroad: Weekend Rewind is brought to you by ASA: FC Barcelona, the summer residency program that allows teenage soccer players to be Americans Abroad, training at fabled FC Barcelona this summer. If you want to experience the dream of playing and training at FC Barcelona, then contact ASA: FC Barcelona for information on the July camp.

  1. I went to Herenveen’s site and babelfish translated the game summary. Bradley did not have any assists, and was substituted in the 64th minute. (Three of the goals were scored before he was substituted).

  2. Kpugs, its the fact that he was a very good sub for Benfica, and then overnight after the olympics qualifying he went to non existents.

  3. Freddy’s exclusion is partially due to all the coaches he’s had, but also partially because he’s a young kid playing for one of the best teams in the history of Portugal.

I just don’t understand why my fellow Yanks expect ANY American who goes abroad, including very young Americans, to immediately become the next Zidane, or Ronaldo, or whoever. HE IS 18 AND PLAYING AT BENFICA, he is one young kid amongst many, for the love of the flying spaghetti monster HAVE PATIENCE! Jeez.

  4. Orzoco will have to prove he does things in the Olympics, which I believe he will be given a chance. But after that then he’ll go up.

  5. Any San Luis fans?

How good is Michael Orozco? He’s starting with a team that’s tied with Chivas on points, but second because of goal differential. Senior team call up anytime soon?

  6. Props to Standard Liege for winning their first title in 26 years, up 10 with 3 to play. They have yet to lose all year, and book a trip straight to the CL group stages.

  7. Freddy’s exclusion is probably because of the new coach. He’s on what? His third coach now?

Didn’t Camacho quit while he was home for Olympic qualifying?

  8. What about Brian West at Frederikstad FK in Norway? Does anybody know if he is playing. I saw him listed on the club’s website but I can’t read much else. Please include him Ives! Thanks.

  9. groovester, are there any other Americans or US-born players in La Liga?

If there are, that’d be awesome. Cap them now!

  10. Ergotelis beat Xanthi 2-0, not lost. That result kept them from being relegated. Mathis had been a regular substitute, although he hasn’t played in the last two or three games.

  11. I’d be really interested to find out what happened to Freddy Adu at Benfica. You think he’s being punished for playing so much for the U-23s? He was a regular sub off the bench for them earlier in the season, now he can’t even make the bench. Perhaps he’s tiring from his first intense European season.

  12. Jonathan Spector was out with a hip injury.

Orlando, Eddie Johnson is not hurt, he scored a goal a few days ago for the reserves team vs. Aston Villa. He was just left out the 1st team by the coach.

  13. Great job over there at Benfica, they’ve dropped to 4th place, 24 points off the pace. And Freddy Adu couldn’t help this team how???

  14. Ives – Thanks for adding the Mexican League. Great to have that info.

Maybe for next week, the beach soccer league too, since John O’Brien is there and it counts as a sort of exile from the topflight?

Yeah, and you thought no one would get a stupid O’Brien reference in.

  15. Chocolate Thunder – the only way I would know for sure to see if Bradley got assists, would be to check out the gameday thread on BigSoccer. They’re pretty good about giving good detail on the action, with some of the users based in The Netherlands.

  16. Any way to figure out how many (if any) assists Bradley got, both for this weekend’s game and for the season? I know some people don’t care about assists, but they matter, especially for a center/attacking mid.
