With one timely goal, Brian McBride helped revive Fulham’s chances of avoiding relegation. Okay, so the chances are still pretty grim, but it was a refreshing moment in an otherwise disappointing season for America’s adopted EPL team.
McBride’s goal highlighted an otherwise glum weekend for Americans Abroad. You had the likes of Freddy Adu, Eddie Johnson, Bobby Convey and Sal Zizzo not dressing in their team’s matches while Michael Bradley saw his Heerenveen squad suffer a tough loss in its chase for a European place (though to be fair, Bradley isn’t going to be around next season anyway.
It wasn’t all bad news. You had Clint Dempsey finally getting off the bench to start a match for Fulham, Bryan Arguez dressing for Hertha Berlin, Heath Pearce seeing time off the bench for Hansa Rostock and Lee Nguyen starting and playing 90 minutes for Randers.
This week’s edition of American’s Abroad: Weekend Rewind is brought to you by ASA: FC Barcelona, the summer residency program that allows teenage soccer players to be Americans Abroad, training at fabled FC Barcelona this summer.

Feel free to add any other performances I may have not included in the comments section below.
I heard that Bob Bradley was in Mexico to talk with Jose Francisco Torres of Pachuca to see if he would like to play for the Sub- 23 team that will be going to the olympics !!I think that the USSF should do more to get more hispanic players in the US NAT team!! So what happens to Edgar Castillo doesn’t happen again so we don’t lose another good player.
Jengibre, I’m not providing updates on every single American playing professional soccer somewhere in the world. The updates are for the Americans playing in the world’s top leagues.
Now, I know I crossed into dangerous waters when I added Austria and potentially Norway, but I don’t have the time to track down stats for every player. If you want to provide a weekly rundown of American-born players in the Mexican second division then be my guest (Not that you aren’t already writing enough for me ;-).
As for the players in the Mexican league, readers are interested in how Michael Orozco is doing so I included him. If there is enough interest to include other players I will include more, but right now the interest is minimal.
Ives, do the first division guys not count as americans?
dude demerit stfu before i bishslap you back to bangkok.
anyone notice how dempsey is always seeing the play, getting the position right, but not getting the goal?
mike bradleys game winner against sweeden, jozy altidores goal against mexico, and just recently mcbrides goal against reading. Hes always crowding the same area as the person who got the goal. I dont know if thaats a good thing or something that should be worked on, but thats the reason he should always start for the U.S. Nats, he reads the balls in pretty well.
its guy love,
thats all it is,
guy love,
hes mine, im his,
theres nothing gay about it…, in our eyes.
And were you serious with the Mexican second division players? That list isn’t making the cut, but you’re more than welcome to update us on them in the comments section.
I was wondering how long it would be before someone would play the (Since you include Rossi you must include these Mexican-Americans on your list) card. 11:46am, I had the under.
Fair point, but I’m still not necessarily increasing the Mexican League list.
kpugs, get over yourself… you my friend are being the idiot. Yes he needs adjustment time – which is EXACTLY WHY HE WON’T DRESS AGAIN over four more games!
I like the fact that you read *so much* into my “snarky” little statement!
I think he’s got talent and you can’t teach speed… but the poor guy looked like a lost puppy when he was on the field.
Plus if talent and an adjustment period were all it takes, Benny wouldn’t still be on the reserves list at Gawd-awful Derby.
For what it’s worth, I may not be able to play better than EJ but I’m coaching a U-6 girls team that would be tough for him to handle… 😉
Torres – Pachuca
Castillo – Santos
Hernandez – Jaguares de Chiapas
@dano, the injury not healing yet sounds ominously familiar. I hope things turn around for him.
Hey Jengibre…
What teams do Torres, Castillo & Hernandez play for? It will give me some guidance as which teams to look for when the Mexican league comes on.
Thanks…
Lee
Nice to see Orozco getting some love.
After watching Torres play for Pachuca against DCU, I hope that USSF is knocking down his door and throwing money at him. Hopefully this alleged courtship of U.S. latinos by USSF will come to fruition. Having US Nats palying in the FMF can only help us more against Mexico.
Thanks for adding the Mexican League to your American’s Abroad list. But it’s not just Orozco in Mexico, what about Jose Francisco Torres, Edgar Castillo (If you’re going to include Rossi), Daniel Hernandez and 3 others in the 2nd division?
@Homey, I think the injury just hasn’t healed for whatever reason yet. Hopefully with the offseason just around the corner, he’ll have plenty of time to rest and let it heal properly. I guess we’ll see if he can get back to the level he was at.
McBride hasn’t scored many goals this season because he was out injured for about 6 months. And since he’s scored ~10-15 goals a season consistently when he’s been healthy, I would bet other teams include him in their scouting report. However, the PL has given the golden boot to the highest scorer to someone who nets more like 25-30 in recent seasons. McBride may be good, but he’s not THAT good.
Is Bobby Convey the new John O’Brien – good talent, great career outlook, then one bad injury, and good night?
I thought he was healthy again, though it might be more of an issue with how well Stephen Hunt is playing in that position.
Still…not to even be on the bench…
So how many goals has McBride scored for Fulham? Surely he must be the highest scorer in recent years? Does the Premier League acknowledge his talent?
Thanks Northzax, that’s what I was looking for.
So EJ went from a starter to not even dressing. I’m not surprised. The Championship might be a better fit for him anyway. It’s too bad, that guy has alot of natural ability to be so scared to utilize it.
ives:
how about this for the norway results and lineups? http://www.flashscore.com/soccer/norway/
it will tell you for instance, that Troy Perkins picked up a clean sheet for VÃ¥lerenga IF against Lillestrom.
Eddie needs some time in the reserves, that kid isn’t ready just yet. We could probably be in a better spot if they had went that way, and gave some more time to Healy or something.
Granted, dude hasn’t performed, but we know he has it in him in a big way, against big talent.
Guys, I don’t have the Americans in Norway because getting Norwegian results isn’t exactly easy. I will try to incorporate it but anyone with a quick way to find player results from the Norwegian league is more than welcome to post them here or tell me where to find them.
Eddie Johnson is a Dog that belongs in the MLS.
Any news why Cletus did not play?
Tex, there are 19 Yanks in England, 10 in Norway, but great math skills.
Tom, maybe you should sign for Fulham, I’m sure you are way better than him. Because as we all know there is no such thing as an adjustment period when you’re Eddie Johnson.
I’m sorry…do you not remember how long it took Dempsey to get into the team and play well? Idiots like you are unbelievable.
I think we can cut and paste
“Eddie Johnson did not dress for Fulham.”
for the remaining four games of their season.
Was glad to see they moved Dempsey into the midfield, where he’s probably more comfortable.
Considering the result, maybe he’ll stay there against L’Pool! He did score the relegation saving winner against them last year!
FrozenTundra, Freddy doesn’t really play, like, ever. That’s the story.
K. Bowen, Pearce went months without even dressing followed by a period as an unused sub before working his way back into the rotation the past few weeks. That is why I say it is good to see him getting off the bench. He has played his way back into the rotation, which is good news.
Nice to see updates on Orzoco now.
Great pic of clint Ives! New desktop for me.
What is this Pearce “getting off the bench” business, as if he never does? He plays in almost every game.
There are more yanks in Norway than anywhere else so what’s happening with them????
What’s the story with Freddy? Did he get banged up or has he had some rough training sessions?
Rossi in not American Aboard……he’s New Jersian Aboard.

lets get over the fact that Rossi is not American and move on. If he considered himself American, he’d be playing for our national team. He does not have the American pride or commitment to this country to be labeled an “American”. He is only that by birth, and he does not deserve to be considered one. take him off the list

1. Re: Jersian abroad – clever! I see what you did there! Although, now that I think about it, that does sound like the name of a brilliant and horrifying reality series.
2. Re: ben’s definition of American status – I think you’re onto something. You should write a letter to the State Department. It seems pretty intuitive that the most important criteria in being an American should be American pride and committment to the country.
I’m always amazed that people like you have figured out how to use computers. Beyond the complete lack of originality or logical thought, it’s astounding that one can type so accurately with such large, hairy knuckles.
Every time someone complains about Rossi being in Americans Abroad, God kills a kitten.
i thought dempsy played a pretty good game.. not sure the last time I saw him track back so much and play d.. he must want to keep playing
Ives,
I just tried to post something and as* was picked out as being a “bad word.” What is up with that?
Pearce and dolo’ both had assists, Pearce’s was a great pass on the game winner.
…Yep, I’m on the internet.
You never heard of Rossi?
Where u been all this time?
who is rossi……….never hear of him
What the heck happened to Preston Zimmerman? Is he still on the books at Hamburg? He saw a lot of time with the reserves last year, and now it seems like he can’t get a game. Ives, what’s the deal? I thought the kid was a prospect.
oh, i was injured?? i mustve forgot.
anyways, ives if you need money, just ask me when we make it back to the premiere league.
Dont go sticking some blatant advertisement in mah americans abroad plz?kthxbai. Back to my COD4 now.
I think Demerit is still trying to get fully fit from his injuries but I could be wrong.
Hey Ives, why do you think ive gone from being captain of my team trying to win promotion, to not dressing? WSUP WIT DAT SHIZ!?!?!?
Goodson scored his first goal in Norway this weekend.
You can watch the highlights for just about all of these games at http://watchsocceronline.blogspot.com/
Wow, didn’t take you guys long at all to get to the Rossi comments this week. I’m impressed.
