Good morning folks. I wasn’t planning on doing a running commentary from Red Bulls practice today but I can drop a few tidbits for you while I am here.
Dane Richards is continuing running drills and looks to be moving at a good speed. Straight-ahead running isn’t the issue at this point. It’s the cutting that he is still trying to incorporate.
Juan Pablo Angel is not taking part in full training, perhaps just taking a day off. He is here, doing some light work on the side, but after Saturday’ match and his recent recovery from a viral infection, Angel probably just needs a rest.
Chris Innes is a beast in the air, and probably already has a better vertical than any of the other Red Bulls central defenders. It’s only his first day of real training but I think it’s a good bet that he is signed, or at least made an offer.

The game action is over for the day so the team is breaking up for some shooting and free kick drills.

You can’t really get a sense of who Osorio is considering for Jeff Parke’s starting central defense role on Saturday. Parke and Innes are playing centerback on the two teams. I think Kevin Goldthwaite will wind up getting a look there.

Innes definitely communicates well from the center back position and holds the line well, which you would expect from a veteran with his background.

Hunter Freeman is at training and he isn’t wearing a walking boot for the first time that I can remember since his ankle injury. I don’t think he’s taking part in any sort of drills but he is making progress in his comeback.

A few questions on the Marmol situation. Since the league is taking it’s time with the deal, how is Marmol being compensated for his time? Has he been trialing without a steady paycheck for two months? Is he independently wealthy? Where has he been staying? Are NYRB footing the bill for his housing and expenses since he does not have a contract? If so, what is the league policy on payments made to players without contract?
Jerry, a 3-5-2 is not necessarily a more offensive formation than a 4-4-2. In fact, depending on how you play it, it can be more defensive, as the back 5 (3 defenders and 2 defensive mids) don’t have as much freedom to get forward as the back 6 (2 central defenders, 2 fullbacks, and 2 center mids) in a 4-4-2. Ultimately though, it depends more on the personnel running the formation. If you throw 3 defensively minded midfielders in, with 2 wingers and 2 forwards, you’re probably not going to see a large proportion of the team getting forward. However if you have players in midfield who like to roam, it can be quite the opposite.
Ives, any idea on when the Marmol situation might work itself out? It seems like MLS is taking its sweet time.
I dont understand how JCO is Defensive Minded coach yet he opts to use a offensive formation? what happens if it fails? would 4-4-2 be the answer?
Uneducated statement: in all honesty I can’t see Innes being better than Parke. He was the best player on the worst team in the SPL. Wow, big deal. Now of course I hope he IS good enough to get signed, and I hope he DOES play well. But the odds have to be against that.
Also, what is wrong with Carlos Mendes? How bad does he have to be performing that there is a chance he won’t even get the nod at center back with the starter suspended?

In a 4-4-2 Parke would be the other centerback i would wager. In a 3-5-2 Parke would likely be one of the other backs in the 3 man line.
I doubt highly you will ever see parke playing a fullback role unless a rash of injuries and suspensions forces Osorio’s hand and even then it seems unlikely.
Innes a beast in the air, huh? Anyone who can put Parke to shame on that front must be something. Hope the rest of us get to see this guy in action.
Dont forget how long it takes for players to get work permits, it would be near miraulous if it occured that fast.
Ives, I know we have coverage in Mendes (I suppose Stammler could still slide back there if need be), & also recall JCO stated it’d be several days trial. But given his experience, Parke’s abscence this week, and your first impressions, what are the chances the deal gets done in time for Innes to play vs Dallas?
