Red Bulls Practice Report (Running Commentary)

Good morning folks. I’m coming to you from Montclair State University, where the Red Bulls are going through their first practice after Saturday’s 2-0 victory against the Columbus Crew. It just began a short while ago and there are already some juicy tidbits.

Here was the action from Tuesday’s practice:

——————————-

12:10pm- I’m heading back to the locker room. That’s all for today from Red Bulls practice. I’ll post more on the post-practice interviews later this afternoon.

——————————-

12:07pm- Marmol has two goals in an otherwise fiesty game. I must say that it will be a shame if Marmol winds up not playing in MLS.

——————————-

Noon- Leitch with a nice finish, Thornton with another nice save. Innes’ Scottish accent is great, it’s been too long since we had one of those around here (Not since Mo Johnston left), Jeff Parke with a good goal from about 12 yards out.

Here are the squads for the 6v6 work:

Marmol, Meza, Palacio, Innes, Sassano, Leitch

Wolyniec, Borman, Parke, Gilkerson, Ubiparipovic, Williams

——————————-

11:55am- Marmol with a quality dribble and finish. Ubiparipovic finishes off a nice pass from Williams, Thornton stones Ubiparipovic on a breakaway. Chris Innes’ squad is the one getting scored on, but hey, ht’s a 7v7 short-field game so you can’t really tell much.

——————————-

11:50am- Five minutes in and the best player on the field in this Lider Marmol. Danleigh Borman just scored a goal and Richie Williams (yes, the coach) just scuffed a clear look.

——————————-

11:45am- I’m sticking around for a bit to watch Innes do some work. The reserves are playing a short-sided game.

——————————-

11:43am- Well, practice has pretty much ended for the first-teamers. I was expecting some scrimmage action but I don’t think any is taking place. Innes is working with reserves who are still on the field but the full squad has broken up, with most first-teamers heading back to the locker room.

——————————-

11:38am- Okay, things have slowed down here. When the action begins I’ll check back in.

——————————-

11:30am- Matt Kassel is in the house. Yes, I know, you would think he would be in school since, well, he’s still in high school. It should be interesting to see how he stacks up in training today.

——————————-

11:26am- Okay, so maybe Dane Richards running was the only juicy tidbit so far. Mike Palacio is lapping the field in the current conditioning drill.

——————————-

11:24am- Altidore Looks to be completely recovered from his bruised knee, though you probably figured that after his two goals in reserve action against St. John’s on Sunday.

——————————-

11:15am- Richards is picking up the pace a bit (I can hear the Rocky theme in my head as I watch). The last running drill finished and Richards went straight for the bench.

And yes, Chris Innes is fit.

——————————-

11:13am- Guess who is participating in running drills? None other than Dane Richards. He’s striding along rather gingerly, but he is on the field and is participating in team running drills.

——————————-

11:10am– Chris Innes is in the building, well, on the field. Jorge Rojas is not. I’ll find out the deal with Rojas after practice (though I have heard that there might have been visa issues for him).

  1. Guys, practice was probably one and a half hours at least, longer for the reserves who kept playing. They probably trained and played for more than two hours.

  2. Yeah – jeebus, practice is less than an hour??? Aren’t these supposed to be, you know, professionals? What else do they have to do with their day?

  3. How is Marmol being paid. Everyone has to eat. As he is not under contract with anyone could he pack up and train with, say, Colorado? Is he paying for insurance himself?

  4. This Marmol situation is getting curioser and curioser. Any chance you could shed some additional light on it Ives? I know his original demands were above what MLS was willing to agree to, but has there been any progress since?

The whole situation exposes some massive flaws in the league’s player signing system. RBNY want him and are prepared to pay what would be required, yet the league – from the looks of it – trying to bargain him down so that another club, with whom he has not been training, can sign him at a lesser number.

  5. Thanks for the commentary Ives….MLS needs this kind of deep coverage!

Just one question though…What happened to your post game analysis from Saturdays matches?

  6. Cheers to Richards back on the field and running! I’m unconditionally rooting for no injuries and quick recoveries league wide, I’m generally satisfied with the 1st team quality MLS rolls out, it just generally falls off so bad after that…

  7. Maybe Kassel snuck out during his “cross-country” segment of gym class. Ah the memories. Now I’m stuck in an office staring at CAD waiting for your updates! 😛

  8. Ives these updates are AWESOME…greatly appreciated. On a side note its nice to see they had a reserve match, it is crucial those guys get minutes, no matter who they play. Keep those updates coming.
