SBI MLS Goal of the Week: Jozy’s blast

Choosing this week’s MLS Goal of the Week should take most people about five seconds. While there were some good goals, including Laurent Robert’s free kick for Toronto FC and Landon Donovan’s streaking header of a Beckham cross, there is only one real candidate for goal of the week.

That would be Jozy Altidore’s amazing run and finish against New England:

What do you think? Is Altidore’s goal the best of the week, or is someone else deserving of the honors? Share your thoughts below.

  1. Is it me, or does Altidore kick the ball into Igwe’s backside, then have the ball fall back to his feet where his stride sends the ball forward into space for him to run on to.

Its an amazing physical effort and a brilliant shot at the end, but I wouldn’t go ahead and vote for it for goal of the week without seeing the other nominees. I do know that Donovan’s header was pretty nice as well.

I think you may be drunk. If you think Donovan’s goal was just getting in the way of a cross and heading it in you might be the dummy.

Donovan was being tackled Gridiron style after fighting through 3 other people to get there. Ianni literally was laying on top of him once they hit the ground that how closely he was being marked. It was a kind of goal you simply don’t see much (if ever) in MLS.

That said, I have no real problem with Jozy winning as it was a tough run and a powerhouse finish that just tacked on another million to his transfer fee and just put him on a plane for Europe in the summer rather than after the season. (Please go to Barca or Bayern, Jozy) However, calling it ‘clearly better’ than Donovan’s is a bit nuts.

  3. Are u kidding me (to those who denigrate Jozy)? Jozy’s gut thumping, relentless, powerfull run and and then blast from distance with two men between him and goal was tremendous. To quible over the refinement of his moves is like turning down an NYC porterhouse because it doesn’t taste like sashimi.

  4. boo — the ‘moves’ leading up to this goal were garbage… tried to knock it to the side of the D (unsuccessfully) – got a lucky bounce, and hit a blind shot w/ his eyes closed..

yes – the kid is a bull (no pun intended) channeling some rooney like qualities.. however –> w/ all due respect, simply no where near the world class finisher some are hyping him up to be

my vote goes to landon’s header

  5. Frank, you’re an idiot, how about that?

This is so much better than Donovan’s goal, and Jozy doesn’t stand over a defender screaming like a little baby after it.

  6. My vote goes for Landon, that was an exceptional goal all around. Jozy’s goal was deffintely sweet but he was lucky the ball bounced the way it did and then he just took off and ripped it. Great stuff.

Is it me or does Jozy seem to think he can bully his way through defenders? I’ve noticed that recently he has taken the ball and seems to just want to plow over defenders and then gets pissy when refs call fouls on him. I dunno, just an observation.

BTW Mighty, not all Fire fans are Mexican but you’re welcome to assume.

  7. Matt, his set task aside, Leitch still committed the foul that gave New England the dangerous free kick, then he created the space in the wall that the equalizer went through. Those two plays cost the Red Bulls two points and that is why he gets consideration for Player of the Weak.

  8. One commentator had this to say about Chris Leitch’s performance:

“Chris Leitch deserves criticism for his foul on Adam Cristman followed by his disappearing act on the wall during Jeff Larentowicz’s goal, but anyone criticizing his play in a right wing role just wasn’t paying attention. No, he wasn’t much of a threat going forward but his task in this match was simple, limit Khano Smith’s impact in the game. Now, did anybody even notice Smith except for when he took part in the Revs’ goal celebration? Me neither, which tells me Leitch handled his assignment pretty well.”

That certainly doesn’t sound like someone deserving of Player of the Weak.

  10. c’mon now, even the msg announcer says ‘lucky bounce’. watch the replay on mlsnet, lots of replay angles there. still a great goal, sometimes you create your own luck.

  11. This goal reminds me of some of the goals that Drogba scores sometimes when he creates something out of nothing through sheer will. NM

  12. While I haven’t seen Lando’s goal, I really hope Jozy gets to where he can do this at the international level. Talk about creating your own shot and then finishing…jeezus.

  13. A lucky bounce????? Why would you call it luck? The defender try to take it away and Jozy manage to keep his run going!! You guys are funny… i think we have to Many Mexicans/Fire Fans in this place……Landon’s Goal was a good one…nice but in no way is it better then the 18 year old soccer player from New York ….

  14. the donovan goal was sweet, i would vote for that one. sweet cross, sweet run, sweet header, sweet trash talk the guy you just torched. jozy’s goal was a great finish, but got really lucky on the bounce.

  15. I’m leaning toward Landon. As opposed to simply “finishing off a great cross”, Donovan started the play with a quick ball to Beckham, made a great run and dove through the play while being steer-wrestled by the defender – the same defender who laid him out with a cheap shot just minutes before. It’s close, but the whole package gives my vote to Donovan.

  16. Lee, are you drunk? Donovan finished off a perfect cross from Beckham for a header. What makes that goal of the week? Jozy beat TWO defenders AND torched a shot past the goalkeeper. It isn’t even a discussion. It’s not an LA or New York thing. If you pick Landon’s goal over Jozy’s goal then you’re just plain dumb.

  17. No surprise here. I’m sure Landon is winning on the LA blogs.

But seriously, this was not the goal of the week. As much as I love Altidore, he nearly lost the ball 3 times on the dribble.

Luck of the week yes. Goal of the week? No.

  18. Frank, for your information I usually do post the video clip with each goal of the week. I didn’t get around to picking one last week. Maybe if you paid attention you would know that.

I guess you’re still upset about the goal he scored against Mexico. It’s okay Frank.

  20. Ives,

You are such a NYRB homer. I know you have a man crush on Altidore. Why don’t you post video clips from every weekly winner.

  21. i has no idea what happens in this video when jozy hits it past the first defender. It looks like it takes a bounce somewhere, did the ball go around and off the defender?

a great finish though, he belted it like a german.

  22. Absolutely no question! Altidore’s goal may be a candidate for goal of the year. The fact that LD’s goal is currently beating him on MLSNet is simply sad. Beckham fans need to get their heads out of their a$$’s and realize that while it was a great goal by LD and Becks, it just doesn’t compare.
