Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Fulham did it.

A month ago Fulham looked dead in the water and the five Americans on the squad looked destined to play in the Coca Cola Championship next season. That was before the dramatic late-season run capped off by Sunday’s thrilling 1-0 win against Portsmouth. As if avoiding relegation wasn’t enough, now there’s word that Fulham may even qualify for a UEFA Cup place thanks to its Fair Play ranking.

Fulham’s EPL survival was the highlight of a good week for Americans abroad. You had Tim Howard and Everton locking up a UEFA Cup berth, Michael Bradley helping Heerenveen lock up a UEFA Cup place, Sal Zizzo making his debut for Hannover 96 and Oguchi Onyewu helping Standard Liege wrap up a dream season with another win.

This week’s edition of American’s Abroad: Weekend Rewind is brought to you by Chicago Soccer Apparel, the official soccer apparel store of Soccer By Ives. Whether it’s MLS, European clubs or national teams, Chicago Soccer has all your soccer gear needs covered.

  1. I don’t want to be an apologist or anything, but could it be that Rossi’s injury is bothering him? I’ve noticed that he doesn’t really play the full 90 minutes anymore. The announcers keep going on about he needs the “rest”.

  2. Hey Ives,

It’s time you stop reporting about Rossi,

since the hatred for him here is Pathetic.

LEAVE THE KID ALONE YOU LOSERS !

  3. It’s obvious that my cutting remarks about Rossi have crushed his morale and now his game is suffering. Serves him right.

  4. Is Freddy getting any playing time for Benfica Reserves or something? I never hear about reserve matches (that is no indictment of your reporting, just my lack of knowledge).

  5. Ives, any word on when we’ll see the roster for the USA v. Argentina match? Hopefully not after the England match. I want to know who the Argies are bringing over.

  6. Ives, I meant no disrespect by posting that comment. I’m just giving you a hard time. I’m sure if I looked I could find dozens of other soccer journalists who came to the same conclusion. One of the great things about Fulham’s comeback this season is that they did it while proving many nay-sayers and doubters wrong.

  7. With a full USMNT, I fear no team. All that is needed experience.

And yes, other countries can field 3 squads that are as good or better than ours, but you can only put 11 on the field at a time.

  8. I only say that because we are guranteed to get our Azz handed to us, like the time Bob took our B team to South America last years. Also if these euro based players are never gonna get any real playing time in actual tournments like the World Cup then why play them here. Play them aganist Cuba or T&T or some weaker teams.

  9. gimmi- Well most MLS based players who’d make the roster for such big friendlies are in dire need by their clubs to continue their success… Take Landycakes from LA and they’re bound to lose that week(s)….. Take Rogers from the Crew and they may find it hard to achieve a victory… take Jozy from NY and you’re losing a quality front line player… Cooper seems to be one of FCD only threats… etc…

mls season is in full swing… Euro seasons are ending(ended) and the players are more then accessible…. But i wouldnt be shocked to see a euro dominated roster, with some MLS’ers in the rankings…

  10. “Why is Bob only using Euro based players for the big matches in Euro, I think our best should be out there playing because these are some great test for our players. And we can use all the experience we can get aganist big time teams.”

Because MLS ignores FIFA scheduling rules and Bob’s boss Gulati has a conflict of interest with regard to MLS??

  12. Oguchi Onyewu and Michael Bradley have been having a fantastic season. Ive read that Danny Califf is set to leave Aalborg for a team in Germany or Holland this season? Same for Bocanegra. Any truth to this?

  13. Come on guys, I wrote that based on what was being reported at the time. I thought they had mathematically knocked themselves out after that weekend. Obviously I was wrong (Reading’s complete collapse ultimately saved Fulham).

If we’re pulling old comments, why don’t you go back to two weeks prior to that, when I wrote this:

“So how will Fulham avoid relegation? A closer look at their remaining schedule and the schedules of the teams they are chasing shows that escaping the drop can be done.”

Give this one a read for those of you who forgot it:
