Fulham’s Great Escape: A look back

If you are a Fulham fan still glowing after the amazing fightback to avoid relegation, or even if you’re just an American soccer fan glad to see some American stars stay in the EPL, you will certainly enjoy the following video of Fulham’s comeback (thanks to Pat the Red Bulls fan for finding this one):

  2. All I have to say is that Brian McBride is the man.

Also I love the fact that Fulham is a team bleeding with the Red, White, and Blue of the American Flag, with McBride and Dempsey, and Keller, and Jones

  3. McBride and Bullard returned at the right time. Bullard’s play-making in midfield and of course McBride’s penchant for scoring the big goal allowed them to survive. The tandem made the entire team play better.

I’m no Hodgson fan but while Dempsey’s role faded as an offensive threat a bit, the new coach got him playing some strong ball-challenging defense. It is yet another example of why the strong US players need some overseas exposure…they learn things!

    Great stuff.

  4. This was the first year I was well versed in p2p technology, and thus, able to catch almost every (37 or 38) Fulham EPL match in it’s near entirety (aside from occasional lag, etc).

Watching the video just reminds me that having watched all of those matches, and only seeing 8 wins… it was still all worth it. It was so weird when the wins started coming, because, by the Pompey game, my mind went from expecting the wins to end, to expecting the win to come.

It was really a spectacular finish.

  5. Great video and Fulham had a great end to the season. They escaped the jaws of relegation by a hair! Great job.

  6. I can’t stand that song, but the escape was amazing. It will be interesting to see who stays and who they bring in for next season. Will Keller have the #1 shirt? Will Mcbride stay healthy? Dempsey should go in with a place. Does Boca need to leave to get some run? I was at GAM’s breakthrough second half hat trick in DC against Panama, but he hasn’t been the same since the injury. the faith is gone on that one.

  8. No, thank you Ives. Just spreading the love. I’d love to see McHead and Deuce play in some European games in the fall.

  9. Great Video. I’m a West Ham fan that of course wants Fulham to stay up due to the American Contingent.

The last two end of seasons have been freaking brutal for me (Must admit was more emotionally involved in West Ham’s great escape)…so next year both teams go easy on me!

  10. Thanks for posting this, Ives. I had mentally prepared myself to go down with my team, which in the US means that they won’t be on TV for at least a year. I’ll probably remember this year for a long time.

  11. Good vid!

I’m not going to pretend to be a hardcore Fulham fan, but I’m becoming a real admirer of Hodgson’s. It’s even possible to be optimistic about Fulham’s chances next year, which is remarkable given that they stayed up on goal differential.

  12. McBride is a monster and does nothing but score huge goals. This guy could still be playing with the Nats and making a tremendous impact.

  13. amazing video…to think that they were all done at Man City and then found a way out. McBride could have a street named after him in West London.

  14. As a USMNT fan and definitely a Fulham fan (became a follower when I first discovered my love for soccer and Brian McBride and Boca were the only Americans on the team), this is absolutely the most glorious ending to a season by a bottom club I have witnessed in my time as a soccer fan.

I was devastated when McBride went down injured, but his return was amazing, unbelievable, stunning. McBride has done it all over again. Amazing season.

  16. Any Fulham faithful who has endured the repeated downs, and finally the ups of this season, has earned their stripes. I thought we were done after Sunderland . . who could really have imagined they’d come back to post three back-to-back away wins?

    I love this club.

  17. My favorite part was when the announcer says, “Who else could it be, but Brian McBride!” He is the freaking man.

  18. Unreal couple of weeks. can’t believe I was lucky enough to have the last two Fulham games as my first live EPL experiences. How am I gonna top that? Back in the States and still reeling.

  19. Ives, please stop posting interesting stuff like this. I would like to see more insights and fan views of Salt Lake City and Dallas. That’s what keeps me coming back.

But in all seriousness, Fulham’s season turned around once they came from 2-0 back against City. Amazing stuff. And Eddie “Passback” Johnson had NOTHING to do with it.
