SBI MLS Best XI: Week 6

David_beckham_9_ap

It was bound to happen eventually but Landon Donovan finally didn’t make the SBI MLS Best XI. The Galaxy forward cooled off last weekend, though teammate David Beckham picked up the slack, earning player of the week honors in the process.

Also bound to happen eventually was Brad Guzan’s return to the status as a top goalkeeper. He showed his old all-star form in Chivas USA’s scoreless draw against Houston.

Week Six didn’t offer the offensive fireworks of past weeks, with just 12 goals scored in six matches, but there was plenty of midfield mastery to appreciate. From Christian Gomez’s stellar showing against former club D.C. United, to John Thorrington coming through for Chicago again as he emerges as an early candidate for Most Improved Player.

Here is the SBI MLS Best XI for Week 6.

  1. Aside from Mastroeni I agree with this list entirely. I’d have to think a little harder on who I would replace him with, but probably Stammler who did a great job of shutting down a hot Guevara and TFC midfield in general.

  2. Hey i know Barret squanders chances with the best of them, but I think you still need to point out the good things if your going to harp on the bad stuff

  3. Pablo Mastroeni is still alive?

It’s somehow fitting that Stammler is always the unappreciated understudy. The role of going unnoticed while consistently turning in great workhorse-like performances suits him.

And Chad Barrett should never, ever, even be mentioned for any type of best XI, player of the week, year, month, whatever. EVER. He is the only player I can remember seeing recently who scored two goals in a game and still turned in a god awful performance. Even if he does actually play well all game long, he still shouldn’t be mentioned just based on how terrible a player he is overall. I didn’t watch the last game but I’m sure he wasted at least 6 chances if not more, far outweighing any positives. It’s just who he is.

  4. I remember seeing Adam Moffat play for the Cleveland City Stars last season – my kids got his autograph and he seemed like a really nice bloke. Congrats to him for breaking through with Columbus

  5. as much as this pains me to say.. i think Barret shoudl be a honorable mention.. He made the run to free Rolfe, laid off the pass to Thorrington, and made the move that pulled the Reis out which ended up with a rebound to king..

  6. I like seeing Rolfe in the forward position. Hoping to see him in the SBI Best XI again. And I think that Bakary Soumare has really shown his stuff this season – moving to the backline was good for him. We’ll see how they perform in the coming weeks – if they do well I’ll start to get optimistic.
