Morning Ticker: Czech-Turkey match could go to penalties and arrest won’t stop Sanchez

Good  morning all. It is a relatively slow news day so far but the European Championships keep rolling on so there will be some good matches to watch (well, at least one good match).

Before we get to the Germany-Croatia Euro showdown, here are some stories to get your day started.

Penalties in the Euro group stage?

Just when you thought you would have to wait for the quarterfinals to see a Euro 2008 match decided by penalties comes word that if the Group A match between the Czech Republic and Turkey on Sunday finishes tied then the teams will go to a penalty kick shootout to determine which team advances to the quarters.

Why? Both teams are tied on points and goal differential, so PKs would determine which of them would advance to the quarters in second place in Group A, behind Portugal. The interesting part is that the goalkeepers likely to be involved have had some recent penalty kick drama. Peter Cech is coming off a penalty shootout loss with Chelsea in the Champions League final while some of you will remember Turkey’s Volkan Demiral as the Fenerbahce goalkeeper who turned into a penalty shootout hero when he helped Fenerbahce defeat Sevilla in PKs.

Arrest won’t stop Sanchez

Mexican national team goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez won’t be kept from playing in Mexico’s upcoming World Cup qualifier against Belize in Houston because of his recent arrest in Chicago, Sanchez told reporters on Tuesday.

"I spoke with my lawyers. I can enter (the United States) and I will enter," Sanchez told a news conference in Mexico City. "Even more, I will also enter the week after that because my kids love Mickey (Mouse) and I’m going to go to Orlando. I will enter as many times as necessary and I will show up (in court) with the same truth."

  3. There is some rule that says who would qualify in this situation. I know that only because it may happen (of course won’t) in the group with GER, AUT, POL and CRO. If POL wins with CROa nd AUT with GER there might be a situation where both teams POL and AUT have equal everything. Then I heard they take results from the qualifications to the Euro and results from the last World Cup. Since AUT did not start in the qualification, the result from last WC is taken into consideration. And POL in this comparison wins, since it played there and got some points… But TUR and CZE play each other, so they would have a penalty shootout.

  5. Man there is a joke I want to make about the comments Sanchez made so badly, but will take the high ground…and post them on an El Tri fan forum instead.

    He’s a total douchebag.

  6. It is determined before the match who is the “home” team and who is the “away” team. I think the kits also correspond to the home/away team.

  7. I dug into EUFA’s rule book and found the answer myself: the next tiebreaker is goals scored away from home. How arbitrary is that? ALL of the goals were scored away from home (of course, in each game one team is technically the “away” team, though I don’t know how that’s determined)! Also, there’s no mention of what happens if one of the host countries – who don’t play any away games – is one of the teams tied.

  8. Does anyone know what would happen if two teams who WERE NOT playing the third game against each other tied on points, goal differential, and goals scored (assume that they also tied each other)? Would they have to get together and have a penalty shootout without a game? Would it be the dreaded coin toss?

  9. I hope Sanchez and his kids end up in a hotel room in Orlando next to a party of drunk metalheads who insist on cranking up their music till 5 in the morning even with two warnings from the hotel staff. He’ll be singing a different tune when HE’S the with kids to take care of the next day.
