New York Red Bulls at New England Revolution: Running Commentary

Red_bulls_logoNew_england_revolution_logo

One of the hottest teams in MLS is set to face one of the coldest tonight as the New England Revolution take on the New York Red Bulls tonight at Gillette Stadium.

The Revs come in winners of five of their past six and haven’t lost in more than a month while the Red Bulls come into tonight’s match losers of three of their past four, having been outscored 10-2 in those losses.

So what will be the key to tonight’s match? The Red Bulls are the longest of longshots, still missing Juan Pablo Angel and Claudio Reyna, and still trying to figure out how they will replace Jozy Altidore. Their attack is basically toothless with the exception of Dane Richards while the defense has started to show major flaws after starting the season so well.

The Revs will use its dynamic attack, led by Kheli Dube and Steve Ralston, to stretch the field and find the gaps in a Red Bulls lineup woefully short on talent. So do the Red Bulls have a chance? Of course they do. This is MLS, where good teams always find a way to drop inexplicable results against struggling teams. I wouldn’t bet on it though, not tonight.

I will be doing a running commentary on the match so feel free to follow along here with your thoughts and opinions on the match. Share them below in the comments section.

Now, onto the match.

——————————–

FINAL- Red Bulls 1, Revolution 1. The Red Bulls led for most of the night, and probably deserved the win, but the Revs stepped up and found an equalizer as Steve Ralston salvaged a point.

——————————–

87th minute– Luke Sassano getting ready to get into the game.

——————————–

85th minute– The Red Bulls look nervous now and need to start getting more possession.

——————————–

83rd minute– Look at that flashback. Mark Lisi with the game-winner the last time the Red Bulls/MetroStars won in New England.

——————————–

81st minute– The Red Bulls are in danger here. They can’t let up because the Revs can find a winner in an instant.

——————————–

80th minute– Dube sets up Ralston, who scores from close range. Boyens left him open.

——————————–

79th minute- GOAL REVOLUTION!!! Steve Ralston with the equalizer.

——————————–

78th minute– Van Den Bergh has his free kick deflected off the wall for a corner.

——————————–

74th minute– The Red Bulls controlling things at this point in the game. I thought they might be tired by this point, but they haven’t shown it yet.

——————————–

72nd minute– Pat Phelan is on for Cristman. Strange sub for a team down a goal.

——————————–

69th minute– Still waiting for the Revs to string some passes together.

——————————–

66th minute– Here’s another Red Bulls corner kick and Mike Magee can’t get a header on it.

——————————–

62nd minute– Wolyniec comes in for Echeverry.

——————————–

61st minute– Nyassi with a shot right at Conway. The Revs have started to get more chances.

——————————–

60th minute– John Wolyniec is ready to come into the match.

——————————–

56th minute– Sainey Nyassi sends a dangerous ball into the area but no Revs player was there.

——————————–

——————————–

51st minute– Van Den Bergh misses wide with a free kick.

——————————–

50th minute– Dane Richards is down and his sore ankle looks bad.

——————————–

49th minute– SAVE Conway, he stops Cristman after a loose ball sends him in.

——————————–

47th minute– And we’re back.

——————————–

HALFTIME– Red Bulls 1, Revolution 0. Seth Stammler’s blast has given the Red Bulls the lead while some gritty and smart defending has kept the Revs at bay.

——————————–

45th minute– Juan Osorio was just shown talking to Chris Megaloudis. I have a feeling we’ll see him for Echeverry at halftime. Echeverry has looked awful.

——————————–

45th minute– A perfect half of soccer from a short-handed Red Bulls team. And there’s another shot, this time from Magee, who has it saved by Reis.

——————————–

44th minute– Echeverry just WASTED a great chance set up by Dane Richards, who just raced past the entire Revs defense, okay well at least five Revs players.

——————————–

43rd minute– The Red Bulls showing a lot of energy while the Revs look flat. I said it earlier tonight, the Revs haven’t played great at home this year.

——————————–

41st minute– Let’s see how the Red Bulls protect this leadu.

——————————–

39th minute– Mauricio Castro hurt his shoulder on the build-up before the Red Bulls goal. Wells Thompson has replaced him.

——————————–

37th minute– Van Den Bergh with a beautiful long cross from the left flank and Freeman just blasts it on the full volley from close range. What a goal.

——————————–

35th minute- GOAL RED BULLS. Seth Stammler with a blast.

——————————–

32nd minute– The Red Bulls have shown a lot of energy early on and you can’t help but wonder how long they keep this pace up. I think they’re in danger of burning out early in the second half.

——————————–

31st minute– Ubiparipovic with the yellow card for a foul on Parkhurst.

——————————–

29th minute– Red Bulls are keeping the Revs attack from getting going and have actually had the better of the possession in the last 10 minutes.

——————————–

26th minute– The Red Bulls are doing a good job of knocking it around right now and keeping possession.

——————————–

24th minute– Dane Richards has looked okay at forward tonight. He just needs to get the ball.

——————————–

21st minute– Red Bulls applying some good pressure, Ubiparipovic had a shot deflected and now there’s a RB corner.

——————————–

20th minute– Nice build-up by the Red Bulls, with Richards making some nice moves. Magee winds up with a shot in the area but sends it way high.

——————————–

18th minute– Dane Richards is playing at forward tonight. Interesting move, it’s not somewhere Richards has seen much time.

——————————–

16th minute– SAVE Conway. Larentowicz with a long-range blast that Conway tips over the crossbar.

——————————–

15th minute– Echeverry with a look in the area but has a poor shot hit off a defender.

——————————–

12th minute– Revs have had the early possession, just not the chances yet. Here’s another corner.

——————————–

——————————–

10th minute– Who will step up for the Red Bulls tonight? Magee? Van Den Bergh? Echeverry?

——————————–

8th minute– The Revs have been great in recent weeks but it should be noted that they have been weaker at home this season. Strange, but true.

——————————–

6th minute– OFFSIDES called on a would-be goal by Ubiparipovic. Good call. Nice volley though.

——————————–

4th minute– Carlos Mendes in a defensive midfield role is going to be an interesting one.

——————————–

3rd minute– Ubiparipovic has that deer in headlights look going early. Not a good sign.

——————————–

1st minute– And we’re off

  1. It’s better than a punch in the face, but we’ve got to improve the squad. Our team is hardly going to provide any goal-fests, and pissing away leads, especially on the road, is going to ensure we don’t make the playoffs.

  2. Man, I’ll take this. Red Bull B team drawing at the house of horrors agains the best team in the league.

One frigging bad mistake and it’s a point instead of three. Story of our seson. Sigh.

  3. That was awful, nearly 80 minutes of hard work all just to give up that weak ass goal. And here they come again. Why did I get my hopes up?

  4. I don’t get what Steve Nicol’s problem is. The ref is calling the game pretty eve. Does Steve Nicol just go nuclear after any and all calls against his team?

  5. Great replay, Dube takes Boyens down from behind by kicking his ankles, and Dube is rolling around on the ground grabbing his face. Pure class.

  6. I actually don’t have many complaints on this ref. He’s calling tons of fouls against us but most are fine. That challenge from behind that injured Richards should have been a yellow though, Albright got away from one.

  7. Richards is down, and I’m resisting the urge to bash my head into the wall in frustration. Thankfully, he’s walking off, so I’ve been successful.

  8. that was 10 men for over 1/3 of the match, sorry. and also the result in case you did not hear was a 4-2 win by the Bolivians who looked like rubbish the other night.

  9. Ok… conspiracy theorists…. who thinks this Paraguay @ Bolivia result is a little fishy? Both Roque and Nelson do not start and come in @ 62 min mark and both score… sure it is tough to win in La Paz but Chile ran circles around Boliva the other night up there and Paraguay just beat Brazil when they had 19 men for over 1/3 of the match… it really does not add up to me.

  10. there is no excuse for Etcheverry missing that chance. It should be 2-0 right now. I couldn’t believe no one stopped Richards on that long run.

  11. I’m sorry. I’m working and I just don’t believe it.

Now, tell me when they give up the equalizer just before/after halftime, and I’ll believe you guys.

  12. This guy shouldn’t have gotten up at all, he got up and went back down after the Red Bulls were attacking, ef these whiny bastards, they have the best record in the league.

If Argentina can do it intentionally, Red Bulls can do it without knowing he went back down.

  13. If the lineup they posted is right, I don’t get it. Why is van den Bergh at left back, being one of the few players with some offensive quality actually on the pitch?

  14. Red Bulls AT New England playing against the one-man shutout himself.

Tell me I’m not the only Red Bulls fan looking forward to the slaughter, whoopee!
