Alright everyone back to your seats, it’s World Studies time. Today we’re focusing on South America –Bolivia to be exact– a country whose rich futbol culture isn’t widely know in the States beyond the Moreno residence in Washington D.C.
Now we’re going to watch a film –a short film so don’t think you’re going to get a chance to sleep off last night’s Boone’s or Mad Dog binge. It’s from an upstart filmmaker by the name of Martin Toro and it focuses on a match between the capital city of La Paz’s two rival sides, Bolivar and the brilliantly named The Strongest.
It’s a gorgeous piece of film and it’s got nothing to with anything other than making all of you (and myself) a little more well-rounded and cultured to the world’s game. At the very least you can say you know that the teams involved exist…which may come in handy if you ever meet an attractive Bolivian and you need an in.
Destroyers v The Strongest has got to be the single best-named match-up in all of sports history.
I like Bolivian food. BTW: Bolivar formed a partnership this year with DC United. So if you metrobulls people want to root for a team, root for The Strongest.
Guess Bart doesn’t get out much.
Can’t say I blame him though, I literally knew nothing about Bolivia before college, where I met the single hottest co-ed I’ve ever seen in my life.
She was only around for a semester before she went back home, but every guy would trip over themselves trying to talk to her. I still remember the look on every guys face when she said she was from bolivia. What the f*ck is a bolivia? LOL. Too bad she shot all us dumb americans down, but wow what a looker
Great video. I clicked on those links and it looks like Club Bolรญvar has an American on the roster. Who knew? Zackary Flores. Information on him is hard to come by. Various websites have him at various positions. He was born on August 31, 1982.
woot bolivia!
im american by nationality but bolivian by ethnicity.
these two teams are always a pleasure to watch
@Brant – Of course we married guys do…unless the wife is around and then we just have to say that we only appreciate the wifey. ๐
Hincha Tim has it spot on. As well as the Tarija area (near Argentina) and certain neighborhoods of La Paz.
“All I can say is, just go to Santa Cruz, Bolivia if you’re ever a single guy. Beautiful women.”
What? Us married guys don’t appreciate a good-looking woman?
All I can say is, just go to Santa Cruz, Bolivia if you’re ever a single guy. Beautiful women.
like a fox in the hen house Ives, leaving SF in charge ๐
I have the Ball is Round. At around page 450 now…really great read…highly recommended.
Speaking of being more “well-rounded and cultured to the world’s game,” has anyone read ‘The Ball is Round’? It’s a whopping 900 page history of global soccer. I’ve been somewhat surprised that it hasn’t gotten more attention in soccer circles over here in the US. I found it to be a great read — eclectic and wide-ranging, with a keen eye for the bigger picture.

Great replacement Ives!
Defo a good look to cover all bases, something real soccer fans need to know.
Chosun – I think there might be an honest ref or two still out there. Thanks. ๐
That’s a cool film. Thanks.
F’real. At first, I wasn’t sure whether to agree or disagree…then I used the interweb on my google machine and the interweb’s tubes sent me that. Yikes!
Chosun…….OMG

Karla Dominguez is Bolivian.
“which may come in handy if you ever meet an attractive Bolivian and you need an in.”
Attractive Bolivian, eh? That’s like meeting an honest NBA ref, isn’t it?
