Scolari to be named Chelsea manager

Luiz_felipe_scolari_ap

According to multiple reports from England, Portugal national team coach Luiz Felipe Scolari will become Chelsea’s new manager on July 1. Scolari replaces interim manager Avram Grant, who was let go after leading Chelsea to the Champions League final and a second-place finish in the English Premier League.

Scolari guided his native Brazil to the 2002 World Cup championship before leading Portugal to the final of the 2004 European Championships.

What do you think of the hire? How excited are you by the possibility of Alex Ferguson and Scolari doing battle? Do you still think Avram Grant got a raw deal?

  1. All the influx of money did at Chelsea was put them on an even footing with ManU. Nobody cried when ManU won 8 of 11 years in the league with a payroll that dwarfed all others. Chelsea has a long history of being a top 5 side in the Prem and the big purchases for two years are over. They didn’t even spend more than they sold last year. THis year, the transfers will be of a one-for-one variety with Drogba being exchanged for a high profile striker. Lampard may go and he will be replaced by a high profile middie. ACole may go too, but Bridge is there with a new 4 year contract. Bosingwha was signed to RB to allow Essien to play his natural MF position.

No buying spree, just the normal moves a big club make.

  2. Scolari is the most overrated coach in the world, and calling him a coach is a mistake,he is more like a Motivator.

He will fail in the Premier League,as his teams( Portugal)lack a lot of tactical organization.

I am sorry to say but this isnt a good sign by Chelsea…

  3. Well, he accomplished everything he wanted to with Portugal–winning nothing–it’s about time he did the same at Chelsea.

Question, he ran away, arms flailing, crying like a child from the English media when he was about to become head coach of England. Does he think he’ll get privacy at Chelsea?

I applaud this move…Chelsea at this point are a joke. Getting a new owner and spending half a billion or more is one thing. Continuing the quest as if money is the only ingredient you need is a joke.

In all his years of coaching this guy has two major trophies at the club level. And come on, any one of us could have coached Brazil and won the world cup in 2002. Good luck Chelski!

  4. I’m sure the quotes between Sir Alex and Big Phil will be hilarious when Chelsea play ManU. Maybe not Ray Hudson funny, but still choice. 🙂

  5. The announcement was made now to defuse the rumors. It’s nothing about class or trying to upstage the Euros…it was necessary as player’s agents are busily scurrying from club to club and Chelsea did not want to lose Carvalho in particular.

Yeah, Grant got a raw deal but it’s an ugly business sometimes.

Since Chelsea lost the CL final by the width of the goalpost three separate times in the last 20 minutes, and lost the Prem in the second half of the last weekend….I think Felipao may only have to tinker a bit to push them over the top.

  6. Chelsea will 1-0 every game next season. Chelsea obviously have as much class as Real Madrid. To announce this during the EUROS where his team already has “the Ronaldo distraction”, they are taking no questions that arent about the EUROS. You gotta believe Platini, whose first tournament as President, is pissed because its undermined by this Chelsea news. Another reason for Platini to hate English football

  7. interesting to see what he will/can do at chelski, who i am predisposed not to like very much. flip me into giving chels half a chance and Luiz Filipe will have accomplished something.

grant did not belong, out of his league, my opinion obviously.

  8. “First good news for Chelsea fans in a long time”? Puh-leeze … Try supporting a team without billions to waste on transfers.

  10. Grant got a raw deal.

But this is Chelski, so nothing is beyond their limits of taste or decorum, including leaking coach hiring news when that coach is in the middle of a tourney with a different squad.

    Money sure doesn’t buy class.

  11. I think its pretty ridiculous for this news to come out in the middle of Euro2008 when the guy doesn’t need any unnecessary distractions!

That said, I’m happy for Chelsea and I hope he does well there.

  12. O/T – Ives, do you have any insight on these rumors that Claudio Reyna may be out for an extended period of time? Any chance at all of a buyout of his contract by RBNY?

  13. So that’s why Ronaldo should look for a new challenge in Spain, Scolari doesn’t want to face him. Unsettle your rival, while you coach him internationally, very classy.
