Several stars from the soccer and basketball worlds will gather in Manhattan on Wednesday evening for a charity event that should be a sight to behold.

Steve Nash and Claudio Reyna have organized a charity 8-on-8 soccer game that will feature international soccer star Thierry Henry as well as several NBA stars. The event, which will take place at Nike Field in Chinatown, is open to the public.

The game is set for 5:30 p.m. Will you be there?

  1. True that Ives, just a charity event, no big deal of the breaking news sort like you said, fair enough. Any chance you’re watching it in person? B/c when I’m down there this afternoon and that place is abuzz and the crowd around the fences is 7-10 deep, for me and those there, it’ll definitely be a big deal of the breaking news sort to have these guys in our hood, playing on the field we play on… so it kinda feels like Christmas 🙂 One story I could see coming out of it is the fast growing trend of showing futbol love by NBA players and the possible implications for futbol making new inroads into the mainstream in this country b/c of soccer becoming popular in the NBA, mostly sweet but also a bit sour for me to see, just my opinion. Back on topic, had also noticed a # of other outlets including the NY Times blog had the info up for a while before I saw it here, which just isn’t the norm for any story, breaking or not. So was just bustin’ your chops about it, no offense meant. In general, I give you props when/where I can (and props are due often), but I’ll also try to keep you on your toes when I think it’s due, just like you do for us hehe I’m sure you expect nothing less from any of your readers. Salud.

    ps

    I go by many names… 😉

  2. Guess this answers my question that you’re aware of the event in one of the earlier threads.

I really hope they give Henry the hard sell on why Red Bull is a great place for him to play next summer and beyond. He’d be the ideal DP signing to open the new park.

  3. So our multi million dollar DP signings can suit up for this waste of time but they can’t get on the pitch for us..

    Shame.

  4. If I can figure out which train I need to take to be there I’ll be there.

Is there a lot of space for people to stand?

  5. Where are they going to put all the people??? There’s no stands to sit in around there. Will people just be standing on the sidewalk outside the fence?

  7. Does anyone know the exact address of this park? or atleast the name of it?

Is it the astroturf field in Columbus Park? That’s deep in Chinatown. I don’t know a soccer field 2 blocks from the Bleeker Street 6-train.

  8. @Jerry – There is going to be a silent auction as well as the charity match. I would assume that Nash is wearing the jersey as a means of advertising one of the items that is up for auction. It is a complete guess, but would make sense.
