USA vs. Barbados: Your Running Commentary

Us_soccer_logo

The U.S. national team begins World Cup qualifying today against Barbados at Home Depot Center. The Americans are heavily favored, but they also know that any sort of disappointing result will mean having to travel to Barbados to earn a result.

The Americans will field a lineup you would expect, except for Brad Guzan getting the start in goal. Here’s the lineup:

Brad Guzan, Carlos Bocanegra, Oguchi Onyewu, Heath Pearce, Steve Cherundolo, Pablo Mastroeni, Michael Bradley, DaMarcus Beasley, Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, Brian Ching.

  1. Ives, are we going to get some more of that Q&A today? Also, when are we going to see the launch of designatedplayers.com if that is the big “DP Coming June” deal?

  2. hahah kpugs, relax. I’m obviously not clamoring for an Edson Buddle-Alan Gordon tandem. I’ve seen enough of him in a national team uniform (just one cap, clearly not overrated by US coaches) to understand that he probably doesn’t cut it.

However, if the idea is to reward players who are on form and scoring goals for their clubs right now, doesn’t Mr. Buddle satisfy that requirement? He’s scored more goals than Kenny Cooper! Yes, that Kenny Cooper, unquestionably the best striker in the world!

  3. kpugs: I think people are asking about Gibbs as a possible option at left back.

When will Pearce get credit? All I hear from fellow fans is how left back is the biggest hole in the squad. Pearce is a solid player, pretty much a lock starter at this point, and there is solid backup behind. Bornstein (when healthy) is a decent option. Spector can play there, as can Eddie Lewis. How is that a hole?

  4. Matt…Cory Gibbs? A call up? Seriously? Maybe he should get a few games under his belt and show he’s worthy. Or…ef it, even if he was healthy, are you honestly suggesting we upset the best center back paring we’ve had in years in games that mean something? Dude, come on.

And did someone just mention BUDDLE? I hope that was a joke. Do I really have to explain how awful he is? Given his “hype” that for some reason never dies down despite season after season of awfulness, he is probably the most overrated, overpaid player in the history of this league (outside Lother Matthaus of course).

We are lucky to have a very large player pool. Let’s not taint it with god-awful players. It’s bad enough Nate Jacqua and Josh Wolff are still in the mix. God help me but I’d still take both of them, and cut my arm of, if it guaranteed me no Buddle.

It still amazes me to this day how totally uninformed some “hardcore” fans are.
