Who will the USA play in Barbados second leg?

Johnsonching_ap

With the USA sitting on a comfortable 8-0 lead after the first leg of their series against Barbados, the U.S. national team is poised to play the second leg without several key players. Now what remains is figuring out which new players will get a look in the match in Barbados.

The following ten players were released by U.S. coach Bob Bradley:

Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo), Clint Dempsey (Fulham FC), Steve Cherundulo (Hannover 96), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy), Brad Guzan (Chivas USA), Frankie Hejduk (Columbus Crew), Maurice Edu (Toronto FC), Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA), Pablo Mastroeni (Colorado Rapids) and Matt Reis (New England Revolution).

With Danny Szetela and Chris Seitz the first two new players to be called in, that still leaves eight slots to be filled. Keep in mind that MLS players with games this weekend are very unlikely to be called in. With the Chicago Fire and Chivas USA playing each other on Thursday, we could see several players from those teams (such as Chris Rolfe and Justin Mapp).

So what kind of starting lineup will we see in the second leg? Here’s one possibility:

——————–Johnson———————-

Beasley————-Adu——————-Rolfe

————–Bradley—–Szetela—————

Pearce——Bocanegra–Onyewu——–Simek

———————Howard———————

I’m not sure if Aston Villa transfer target Frankie Simek is healthy but if he is I can see him getting a call in. Chris Rolfe should merit a look as well. And sorry folks but Kenny Cooper will be in New Jersey playing the Red Bulls so he won’t get a call.

What new players would you like to see get a look? Share your thoughts below.

  1. David W. I seen Brek Shea play in the Toulouse Tournament U23 and he play very well, he supposed to play midfield but I saw him play against Italy as a foward and he fights for the ball on the air very aggrasive knows how to control the ball and has good skill and he score couple of goals too bad they lost, come on he is 6’3″ and only 18yrs old, don’t u think Man.United seen something that they like about this kid, plus remember Man. United had few american on the Team before Frank Semik, G. Rossi, Tim Howard on few other I’m trying to remember. Brek remind me version of McBride, Can wait to see this guy on the attack with Altidore…WOW and have Beasley, Donovan and Adu in the attack midfield….GO USA

  2. David W- i see the Papertalk article that says ManU are chasing him, but are there any articles that go into detail??

  3. Re Brek Shea, maybe the failure to give him a chance was a good reason in itself for firing Morrow. If Manchester United are interested in someone on your MLS squad, it is beyond negligence not to have given him any significant MLS minutes. An MLS coach should not need Alex Ferguson to tell him who is a good player on an MLS team.

  4. K. Bowen- no but we saw him in France… the kid has talent and isnt doing anything this week… while he’s playing for an underperforming FCD team, the team itself is actually pretty stacked…

Dax, Alvarez, Cooper, and Oduro…. all taking up spots that he can fill… Not to mention he’s only 18, and they just recently got a full time coach, who just so happens to have experience playing and training kids his age…. he’ll get time soon enough….

oddly enough he’s labeled as a M-D…. personally i saw more potential in him up top against the italians in France…. reminds me of a younger cooper (from the small glimpses i saw from him)… and he has 2 GP this season, however, only mustering up 17 min…. expect to see more from him by the end of the year and start of next…

  5. KC- i dont want BB to call up anyone who actually has a chance at playing a big role with the USMN… Kljestan, Flores and Guzan are the only 3 id want to see brought in from CUSA… as for other MLS teams, i dont want anyone big brought up… Cooper?? stay with FCD… he’ll see better competition this week in the MLS then he would against Barbados….

  6. So far we have Seitz, Szetela, Moor, Rolfe, Barrett & Thorrington…sigh. Aside from Szetela nobody worth a damn(I like Seitz but he is at best #3 in 2010). Still 4 more slots open..anyone willing to take bets that Kljestan is brought back and Bornstein is added too?

  7. I’m a fan of Quaranta too but he needs to play a full season and then prove he will do what it takes during the offseason before he should get a camp invite. USSF is probably very cautious with a player with his background, its great he got help and seems to be over his problems but he is in serious “prove it” mode right now.

  8. mark: the only reason to bring in Tino is because he’s sitting this weekend anyway due to cards. But you are right, he is nowhere ready, maybe if he had gotten help a year ago…I hope someday he will be, but not yet (and I have become a fan this season)

  9. Angel was the first (I think) to mention Spector, although it was in passing. So what’s his situation? Why don’t we at least hear his name thrown about?

  10. As well as Buddle and Quaranta have played, lets have them do it for a full season before they get a call-up to the Nats. It’s great that these two are having good years after several down ones as they’ve always had talent, but they haven’t been right in the head with all the problems they experienced off the field. Just want them to have to work hard and continue to play well before you throw them a bone.

Does Brek Shea get minutes for FCD? Kid looks like he has a ton of talent from the little I’ve seen him, but if he isn’t starting for your MLS team, then lets wait until he’s broke into the lineup before we call for his inclusion on the Nats, even in game such as this where it would take an act of God for the US not to advance.

Where did you here Ives that Villa was targeting him? I keep up with Villa pretty well and have seen no reports on this. It would be great though if it goes through.

    Thank you in advance.

  12. I really don’t understand BB. He just makes strange roster selections. He doesn’t want to “hurt” FC Dallas, but he calls in Drew Moor? I guess he has done this since day one. So the “new” players called for Sunday are: Guzan, Sacha, BB Jr (Bornstein), Wolf and three random selections no one understands. Great job BB!!

  13. Just FYI, Drew Moor from FCD was called up, which brings in to question why the hell Kenny Cooper wasn’t.

FCD’s defense is way more flimsy than their offense.

  14. I think Santino Quaranta has played very well for D.C. United as of late. I would like to see him back on track with the NATS. We might as well use this opportunity to deepen our player pool. Keep the frame of the team in tact so we can get the win, but experiment with some other guys like Cooper ect.

  15. I guess I posted under the impression that Feilhaber was indeed fit, although I could be mistaken in that assumption. I definitely agree with the posts clamoring for a Q Westberg a call up.

I got shat on for mentioning this the other day, but I think Buddle really deserves another look. Maybe Marvel Wynne too.

  16. I’m not sure how much this can help our younger players. I understand we want them to get international expirence but its like playin a high school squad. This in no way resmbles a real international game. The only thing it could do is get them used to playin together. If were goin to try new players out we should do against decent teams, not the top teams but beatible teams that would still give us a challenge. Also everybody is going to look good against barbados nobody is going help or hurt there case for regualar action.

  17. matt- 2 things:

    1- is feilhaber healthy yet??

2- i wouldnt object to him starting as he would need to get some fitness back and some game play to prepare him for next season… hopefully being relegated will open Derby’s eyes to play a quality young midfielder

  18. NOLA soccer fan- i doubt any FCD fan would like to see Cooper get a call up this weekend… FCD are in DIRE need of points…. nothing like giving up one of your best attacking option (i would debate it is their best attacking option) when your team needs W’s to keep up with the rest of the league….

BB is aware of Cooper and his talent…. and he is aware of how much he means to the FCD team…. just like everyone else id love to see him suit up top for the USMNs but lets be frank… we are up 8-0 against a HELLA weak team and we dont need to take him away from FCD… personally id have prefered him instead of Ching on the first game…. Cooper’s touch is too good to be back-burnered behind the likes of EJ and Ching O.o

  20. I swear im about ready to call conspiracy against Kenny Cooper. The man cant even get garbage time…

if Bob Bradley doesnt play him, how will we know if hes good enough for the national team..For all we know he can turn into the next brian mcbride, or the next EJ…

  21. DO we really need to debate about Mapp again? I won’t write anything that Wah-meek hasn’t written already.

I have a feeling we won’t see Subotic for awhile. The kid really felt snubbed by the non U-20 EC call-up.

Jozy, if healthy, has to be called up. The kid needs to stay in playing shape for the Olympics.

  22. A foul that risks injury to another player or shows up a ref is classless. However, there are opportunities to get sent off without doing either.

Onyewu will eventually get another yellow, and it may or may not be deserved. He gets a couple each qualifying season for being big, and a couple more for being American. Resetting the yellows against Barbados would have been the smart thing to do, though to prevent rumors from getting out, he should make the decision on his own so the staff would be innocent.

  23. @SonicDeathMonkey – LOL! Unfortunately, I don’t carry the Frankenstein gene-pool necessary to spawn a Kenny Cooper.

  24. DCUinCT- EJ is in his off season… theres no reason to force another MLS squad to release a what would be starter to go sit the bench or possibly play against barbados… they’d both get better looks against their teams in the MLS then Barbados….

if we wish to see these guys get some time, perhaps during the MLS’s offseason… and perhaps if they both continue to show consistancy…. Buddle is sure to break his scoring record, but how consistant will he be… and will he continue to get the callup when LD is back in LA’s lineup?? i honestly dont know who would start up top for LA

  25. Aquaman- i would truely enjoy seeing more from Westberg…. his standout performance against the Italians was something amazing… altho before that game i cant say ive heard a single thing about him….

but if he’s within range, i definately say it’d be better for the US Olympic squad to have him then Cervi…
