FC Dallas midfielder Dax McCarty has replaced Real Salt Lake midfielder/defender Nathan Sturgis on the U.S. Olympic team after Sturgis suffered a right hamstring injury during training.

The loss of Sturgis leaves the U.S. team with four natural defenders on its roster (Parkhurst, Wynne, Orozco and Ianni) and a fifth in converted midfielder Maurice Edu.

What do you think of McCarty replacing Sturgis? Is the U.S. team’s lack of defenders a cause for concern? Should U.S. coach Peter Nowak have called in another defender?

  1. I hate to hear of anyone getting injured, but as a Hoops fan and someone who knows Dax, I am thrilled to bits for him. No one will ever convince me that he didn’t belong there in the first place, so I’m really happy that he is getting his chance!

  2. Is anyone else wondering where they can watch the “ING Cup”? I have been looking all over but can’t seem to find any television listings…I’m hoping it’s on FSC, does anyone know for sure?

  3. I think it’s a wierd replacement myself, especially with so few natural defenders on the squad. I would have brought a defender who can play midfield, like a Jonathan Bornstein.

  4. I’m looking at line ups and there is quite a bit of flexibility for Novak no matter what formation he decides to play.

I’m happy with the team and look forward to matching up with the other teams in our group. Our youth teams (the A sides anyway) always have good results when matched up against the worlds best. i think we are in for a good show.

I’m also excited to be playing in Asia again. I love those pre-dawn games. It will bring back the feeling of that Portugual game in 2002 (cue BMB’s diving header).

  5. Justice – very true, but seeing as he resembles a possesed redheaded stuff doll, i dont think hell would be too big of a stretch…

    but i agree none-the-less

  6. betinho- i see your reasoning for wanting Guzan, but i have enough faith in Seitz (and even in Westberg(sp??)) to do well enough in the olympics…. having an additional overage player would be ideal… why not bring in Pearce so we actually have a left defender?? one could argue the WCQ requires him, but we have plenty of defenders who can play left that can hold off Guat’s (i think thats who they are playing) attack off…

just an idea… i dont think GK’ing was our weakness….

oh im not distressed that Guzan is coming, of course it solidifies our goal somewhat more, but i think a solid defender would have been just as if not more helpful…

  7. Dax is a solid pick. He’s not flashy, but he’s a work horse. he spreads the ball around the park well, and he’s a dependable addition. This kid would wear the US shirt into the jaws of hell without even flinching. I have no problem with this at all.
