Red Bulls eye Costa Rican midfielder

Of all the new faces at Red Bulls practice today, there was one unfamiliar face who hadn’t been mentioned before.

That player is Costa Rican Under-23 national team midfielder Brandon Poltronieri, a 22-year-old former player for Brujas in Costa Rica. A left-sided player who can also play in a defensive midfield role, Poltronieri is getting a look from the REd Bulls but I’m not sure how good a chance he has of making the team. With Jorge Rojas, Dave Van Den Bergh, Danleigh Borman and David Roth all capable of playing on the left side, there doesn’t appear to be much room for Poltronieri.

If you’re wondering what he looks like as a player, here’s a YouTube video of him in action:

What do you think? Can he help the Red Bulls or is he not really an upgrade? Share your thoughts below.

  1. cfb – you weren’t kidding! I just watched the video and was going to comment on it. I don’t know what I liked best the choice of music (all soccer highlights here forth need to have that Justin Timberlake song as a sound track. I can wait to see a Ronaldinho Manchester City highlight reel to that) or the special effects added while he was writhing around on the ground, over acting a foul. Great comedy. I look forward to coming back to that for a lift as my Tuesday drags on.

I think he’s perfect fit w/ the Red Bulls.

  2. Hey, I’m just hoping Jeff Agoos have figured out how to fill out the damn discovery papers. If the kid doesn’t make our team, let’s at least have some say if he breaks into MLS.

  4. Looks good on the ball and likes to go forward. And if he ever catches on fire he’s got the stop, drop and roll down, so he might be cheap to insure.

I don’t see how SCNewJersey can just say the Red Bulls don’t need him. Cripes, they need anybody.

  6. Pros – hes young, creative, speedy, good actor, decent passer

Cons – the video is deceiving because its not of a whole game so we dont know if he is good through out a whole game or disappears at times

Red Bulls need a instant contributer.

Who knows why red bulls are still looking at midfielders. Red bulls need a foward to help Angel.

  7. He looks good to me. These Red Bulls need all the help they can get. I can think of a couple of idiots he can replace.

  8. I don’t see how he can be helpful. I hate judging players off youtube videos, but…

Seems to be comfortable on the ball, couple good tackles in there, good going foward. I don’t see whats not worth liking. He seems markedly better than some of the players on the Sr Roster.

Depends if you want the most talented roster, or the more balanced roster. At this point i say we hoarde talent, worry about the balance later.

Dives a bit much for me though…

  9. At this point I just want a few wins. It has been a really long time since I looked at the various allocation spots we are using for internationals, who does or doesn’t have a green card, etc. But I don’t like the team bringing in too many untested internationals at once just from a business perspective. Of course this is MLS, and players can be cut or traded fairly easily (usually), so I guess it isn’t a big deal.

  10. Unless he’s going to be developmental, we don’t need him.

And as a side note: If you’re going to make a tape highlighting your attributes, don’t make the soundtrack so unbearable.
