SBI off to Annapolis for U.S. Open Cup

Red_bulls_logoCrystalpalaceusalogo

If you are not among the fortunate 50 or so Red Bulls fans making the trek to Annapolis, Maryland for tonight’s U.S. Open Cup match between the Red Bulls and Crystal Palace USA, don’t worry. Soccer by Ives will have you covered.

I will be making the trip for tonight’s match and will be providing running commentary throughout the evening. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Broadneck High School in Annapolis.

So what’s at stake tonight? A place in the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals. The Red Bulls are taking this match seriously so don’t expect a reserve team lineup (insert your ‘that’s what they’ve been fielding every game lately’ line here). Zach Thornton will probably get the start in goal but he has been very solid this year when called upon (okay, it was just the Chivas de Guadalajara match, but still).

As for Crystal Palace, here is their squad. They are on a bit of a nice run, unbeaten in their past five matches, but they will have a tough time against a Red Bulls team that has been playing well lately (the 10-second brain cramp against Chivas USA notwithstanding).

For those of you going, or thinking about going, here is the location of the game, which is being played at Broadneck High School in Annapolis.

Once again, if you aren’t going to the game, be sure to check out SBI for your live coverage of the match.

  1. Timbo, NY or Baltimore will play at Richmond or at New England.

The New England game would be at Veterans Stadium, Willow Brook Park; New Britain, Conn.

The Richmond game would be at University of Richmond Stadium; Richmond, Va.

The game will be on Tuesday, July 8th at 7 P.M.

  2. Thanks Ives. You are the only person doing match tracker or anything. I wish I could go to the game but I am in Chicago right now. 🙁

  3. Ives, any word on who would be the home team in a potential RB v Revs matchup next week? If we already know, has a playing site been determined?

  4. “This will be a homecoming of sorts for Thornton, he is from the Baltimore area. Maybe if he has family and friends show up, it could double the crowd for the match…”

HAha! was this a fat joke?

  5. Hey Ives, if you catch this whip your boys at ESPN.com into shape. In their most recent MLS ranking they blamed Jeff Parke for the “schoolboy error” that cost the team two points.

Parke can’t catch a break…first the guy is constantly on the edge of losing his job, now he’s getting blamed for Bobcat Goldthwaite’s awful backpass.

  6. If you go to usopencup.com you can see a list of the games that will be on usllive.com. Unfortunately for you RBNY yours isn’t one of them, but there are 3 open cup games that will be. Usually you have to pay for this, but for the open cup games they offer it for free. One thing to keep in mind you will probably be getting the home town commentaters.

  7. I’ll be checking the commentary on my blackberry from the Bahamas. A minor balancing act is required for each page refresh due to limited cellular service, so I’ll have to avoid the pina coladas to preserve reception. The RBNY boys better not make my sacrafice in vain!

  8. Don’t worry Palace, you can go as much as two down and RBNY will be more than happy to let someone go unmarked or unload an errant backpass or two to allow you to tie it up. It’s just our style.

  9. “he match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Broadneck High School” It must be bizzare for some one like Angel to play in the premeirship and then a year and half later you’re playing at the Broadneck High fields.”

You should have seen Donadoni playing on that unlit field in Stony Brook at dusk when the Metros played Long Island in the cup 11 years ago. He probably hadn’t played a competitive game on such a field since he was 14. But he won the game with a beautiful 35 yard free kick, pinging the ball off Rhett Harty’s bald noggin.

  10. Its nice to see clubs other than the superpowers making an investment in US Soccer. Crystal Palace picked a talen rich area to start their partnership

  14. BTW Ives, have you ever thought of doing an internet radio thing? You could do it live and give your own commentary. Just something to think about for the future.

  15. Thanks for making the hike Ives.

BAS reports Conway, Stammler, and VDB stayed home. So I imagine we’ll see Woly and maybe mega starting up front? Or will we put etch/richards in there for some needed pop.

    I suppose we’ll see.

  16. I think it’s messed up how there will be no coverage on tv or the internet for this game…

Let me just say thanks Ives for providing commentary on the game…I know it’s not much but hey at least it’s something rather than nothing
