Sunday Ticker: Arsenal a selling club, Ronaldinho says no to City and Arshavin still waiting

Good morning all. If you are a soccer fan then today is a good day to take a break from the sport because there just isn’t much on the menu. There are some Intertoto Cup matches and some random league play around the world, but nothing that will really quench the thirst, particularly after being spoiled by quality Euro action the past month.

So what can we discuss today? There is Arsene Wenger admitting that Arsenal would have to sell top players for the next two decades to pay for the Emirates Stadium. There is word that Ronaldinho has turned down Manchester City. And there’s also word that Andrei Arshavin was ready to sit and wait for a transfer rather than play for Zenit St. Petersburg.

What do you want to discuss in the soccer world? Share your thoughts below.

  1. doug- many will say that Bush ran our country poorly, so if that has any correlation to how the bin ladens would run Newcastle, i guess it would be nothing new to them 😀

  2. Newcastle says its totally false. Also, an american conglomerate were rumoured to takeover newcastle yesterday as well. They dismissed that as well. Hey, if a guy with ties to the Bin Ladens can be elected our president for the last 8 years, why cant they run a football club? j/k

  3. “Newcastle fans have reacted furiously after learning that relatives of Osama Bin Laden are among the front runners to buy their club. The Bin Ladens, who own a Saudi Arabian building firm, are set to bid £300m for the Premier League club. (The Sun)”

This should be a fun piece of information for the soccer bashers in this country to jump all over. The soccer is a communist sport line was getting a little outdated. Terrorists do love their soccer…

  4. It’s amazing to me that Wenger would say these things and if he did he truly is a whiner.

Everyone deals with debt and everyone deals in the same transfer market. Suck it up.

  5. IVES,

I want to discuss Kamani Hill’s recent trial with AGF Aarhus, as well as FCK’s interest in signing Dwayne De Rosario. You must do this.

  6. How are Arsenal not a selling club? All they ever do is get rid of their older, better players and buy cheap, younger ones. This is exactly what defines a selling club lol.

Every time a player leaves, they always say Arsenal’s lack of ambition is part of the reason they left. You’re not going to win the premiership or champions league with young, and brand new, players every year.

  7. The price tag on Arshavin is about right for what is going on in Russia. First, he isn’t a flash in the pan player based on a few games. Second, you have to realize that these Russian clubs are paying these guys a lot of money. They’ll want to recoup that and make a serious profit. Russia is becoming like Mexico, where the players have high price tags because of the investment of the owners.

  8. It’s a part of the dynamic of foreign media. As irresponsible as the US media can be, they’d nbever get away with reporting what the English media do.

    Agreed.

What is hilarious is that while NOTW reports this, they also report Arsenal is preparing a £18m transfer for Huntelaar while the Sunday Telegraph says Arsenal are the favourites for Arshavin.

  10. Those comments from Wenger cannot be true; and they would be ridiculous and false even if he did say them. Perhaps he had too much wine when he spoke to NOTW? Sounds more like someone created some news on a slow news day at NOTW. If Arsenal haven’t recouped the cost of Emirates by now, they will in a few short years when you consider merchandise, TV revenue, sponsorships, etc.

  11. Arshavin is good. But £25 million good? Zenit’s valuation of this player after a couple of good high profile games is a major problem. If even Chelsea is quibbling over the price you know that there is a major difference between what Zenit thinks he is worth versus what buying clubs do.

  12. I agree with the other posters. His comments just don’t seem to make too much sense. Maybe he has some strategy he is trying to implement through word games? But as another poster said, they sell out every game, they get money from the huge TV contracts, they have tons of sponsorship, their merchandise sells worldwide, and you’re telling me they can’t afford to pay off yearly financing for the stadium?

Would all this not go into the economic forecasting before they even decided to go through with the plans? To me it just sounds like he’s frustrating, bored, or both and wants to complain about something.

  13. Check what Arsenal’s done so far this summer. Lost Flamini but didn’t get a transfer fee for him. Bought Ramsey. Should be sealing up Nasri soon. There’s rumors that Bischoff from Werder Bremen is coming over also. I know it seems like Hleb will be leaving and possibly Adebayor, but if Ade goes, a new striker will likely be coming in. And why would a manager say this? Any club coming for a player will try to get a deal on that player because Arsenal would be labeled as “sellers.” I have a hard time believing that Wenger said that, just doesn’t make any sense.

  14. Boyaca Chico hosts America de Cali in the second leg of the Copa Mustang finals this afternoon at 6:30 on GolTV. The two clubs tied 1-1 in the first leg.

Granted, it’s not the Euro 2008 final, but for those who can’t take a day away from soccer, Chico has been a fun team to watch all season.

  15. Im not believing Wnger at all. Arsenal recouped the entire cost of the Emirates one year after it opened. They sell out every game, they have the most frugal and cost conscious manager in the BPL and he’s talking about selling? What happened with that supposed 60 million pounbd Arsene was supposed to be getting this summer. If this is true, it smells of financial mismanagement. If false, Arsene is just looking for a way(read: excuse) to stay cheap

also I was under the impression that Emirates was going to be paid off soon enough thanks to the low budget young talent approach of Arsene. Guess not
