With the European season already upon us in some countries, and the bigger leagues set to begin action this weekend, it is time to bring back the weekly feature Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind.
Every week I will look to bring you a roundup of activity for the American players plying their trades in top leagues across Europe (and in Mexico), players such as left winger Bobby Convey (pictured above).
Here is how American players did in Europe (and Mexico) this past weekend:
ENGLAND
Marcus Hahnemann started, played 90 minutes and made nine saves in Reading’s 0-0 tie vs. Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
Bobby Convey started and played 90 minutes for Reading.
Jay DeMerit started and played 90 minutes in Watford’s 0-0 tie vs. Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Frank Simek did not play in Sheffield Wednesday’s 4-1 win against Burnley on Saturday. Simek is still recovering from off-season ankle surgery.
Eddie Lewis did not dress in Derby County’s 1-0 loss to Doncaster on Saturday. He has been linked to a return to MLS, as well as a potential move to Crystal Palace (the real one).
GERMANY
Steve Cherundolo started and played 90 minutes in Hannover 96’s 5-0 win against Hallescher FC in DFB Pokal action on Saturday.
Neven Subotic started and played 90 minutes in Borussia Dortmund’s 3-1 win against Rot-Weiss Essen in DFB Pokal action on Saturday.
Bryan Arguez dressed but did not play in Hertha Berlin’s 3-1 win against Eintracht Trier in DFB Pokal action on Friday.
Gregg Berhalter started and played 90 minutes in 1860 Munich’s 2-0 win against TSG Neustrelitz in DFB Pokal first round action on Sunday.
Heath Pearce dressed but did not play in Hansa Rostock’s DFB Pokal match against Holstein Kiel on Saturday.
FRANCE
Carlos Bocanegra started and played 90 minutes in Rennes’ 4-4 tie vs. Marseille on Saturday.
Andrew Jacobson did not dress in Lorient’s 1-0 win vs. Le Mans on Saturday.
DENMARK
Jeremiah White came off the bench and played 34 minutes in AGF Aarhus’ 1-0 loss to FC Copenhagen on Sunday.
Lee Nguyen did not dress in Randers’ 1-1 tie vs. fC Nodrsjaelland on Sunday.
Dan Califf started, played 90 minutes and drew a yellow card in FC Midtjdylland’s 4-0 win against Odense BK on Sunday.
MEXICO
Daniel Hernandez started and played 90 minutes in Chiapas’ 2-0 loss to San Luis on Saturday.
Jose Francisco Torres started and played 74 minutes in Pachuca’s 2-1 loss to Atlante on Saturday.
