Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Bobby_convey_ap

With the European season already upon us in some countries, and the bigger leagues set to begin action this weekend, it is time to bring back the weekly feature Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind.

Every week I will look to bring you a roundup of activity for the American players plying their trades in top leagues across Europe (and in Mexico), players such as left winger Bobby Convey (pictured above).

Here is how American players did in Europe (and Mexico) this past weekend:

ENGLAND

Marcus Hahnemann started, played 90 minutes and made nine saves in Reading’s 0-0 tie vs. Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Bobby Convey started and played 90 minutes for Reading.

Jay DeMerit started and played 90 minutes in Watford’s 0-0 tie vs. Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Frank Simek did not play in Sheffield Wednesday’s 4-1 win against Burnley on Saturday. Simek is still recovering from off-season ankle surgery.

Eddie Lewis did not dress in Derby County’s 1-0 loss to Doncaster on Saturday. He has been linked to a return to MLS, as well as a potential move to Crystal Palace (the real one).

GERMANY

Steve Cherundolo started and played 90 minutes in Hannover 96’s 5-0 win against Hallescher FC in DFB Pokal action on Saturday.

Neven Subotic started and played 90 minutes in Borussia Dortmund’s 3-1 win against Rot-Weiss Essen in DFB Pokal action on Saturday.

Bryan Arguez dressed but did not play in Hertha Berlin’s 3-1 win against Eintracht Trier in DFB Pokal action on Friday.

Gregg Berhalter started and played 90 minutes in 1860 Munich’s 2-0 win against TSG Neustrelitz in DFB Pokal first round action on Sunday.

Heath Pearce dressed but did not play in Hansa Rostock’s DFB Pokal match against Holstein Kiel on Saturday.

FRANCE

Carlos Bocanegra started and played 90 minutes in Rennes’ 4-4 tie vs. Marseille on Saturday.

Andrew Jacobson did not dress in Lorient’s 1-0 win vs. Le Mans on Saturday.

DENMARK

Jeremiah White came off the bench and played 34 minutes in AGF Aarhus’ 1-0 loss to FC Copenhagen on Sunday.

Lee Nguyen did not dress in Randers’ 1-1 tie vs. fC Nodrsjaelland on Sunday.

Dan Califf started, played 90 minutes and drew a yellow card in FC Midtjdylland’s 4-0 win against Odense BK on Sunday.

MEXICO

Daniel Hernandez started and played 90 minutes in Chiapas’ 2-0 loss to San Luis on Saturday.

Jose Francisco Torres started and played 74 minutes in Pachuca’s 2-1 loss to Atlante on Saturday.

If there were any players I forgot, please let me know. The list will start to fill out starting the upcoming weekend so be sure to check Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind every week for the latest in how Americans are doing in Europe.

For now, share your thoughts on how these Americans did this week.

  2. Maybe this should go in the Ask Ives file, but what determines an American Abroad? Last I heard Torres is vying for a spot on the Mexican National Team. I realize he grew up here, but once you ditch the national team that’s it in my mind.

  3. Also, check this out:

That is a match report from August 10th. I used an online translator and the paragraph about Etchu Taba (an American forward) says something like the team really needed him today. The team is Ljungskile SK in Sweden and keeper Colin Burns is there as well.

Ryan Raybould (Gefle IF) and Charlie Davies (Hammarby IF) did not play for their clubs this week. Davies is at the Olympics and Raybould is a new signing who I know little about.

  4. Hey,

I’m curious about the guys in the Mexican league:

    Daniel Hernandez

    Jose Francisco Torres

    Jesus Padilla

Are they on the US MNT radar or are they going to play for Mexico? I thought that Torres has decided to play for Mexico.

Not trying to start the “Rossi isn’t American” crap, I’m just curious.

Also, what about Johann Smith? I know this is a weird request but I remember watching some highlights of the US U20 team versus Argentina (leading up to last year’s U20 World Cup) and Johann Smith really, really impressed me. The video was kind of grainy but he had so much pace and mad skillz that I thought he was Freddy until I realized that Freddy was shorter.

    Thanks

  5. I know that the EPL is the best league in the world, but USMNT players would be better served playing in some different leagues if they are going to perennial minnows in England. Go see what is out there in France, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, or another league that isn’t England. I think it ruins a players confidence and I think the guys playing in other leagues (Bradley, Adu, Altidore, Szetela) have the right idea. Look at what playing for Derby has done to Feilhaber.

I would rather see Deuce playing in a place that is less physical and more technically sound. Fulham and the guys on the lower end of the EPL table rely a lot on long ball/set plays and I don’t see anyone on those clubs developing properly.

  6. Thanks Ives! Glad to see the report back. What about Troy Perkins in Norway? Also, any news on when Spector will return to the Hammers?

Also, Convey played 90 minutes today in a Cup match. Got to be an option for MNT?

  7. The answer to what happened to team America.

    Players out

-McBride left for semi-retirment in Chicago

-Boca left because someone need to be scapegoated for Fulham’s terrible defense. I personally think he played much better under Coleman as a defensive mid.

    -Keller I’ll assume has retired

    Players still in

Clint Dempsey made around 40 total appearances last year and to be honest was out of gas at year’s end. The new gaffer brought in another attacking mid and 5 million new stikers. I would say at best Clint makes the bench now that the prem allows 7 subs this year. Of course RH is going to give his new signings a shot before going to players that were previously with the team. I thought Clint really improved defensively last year but his scoring touch left him during this time. He’ll have to fight his way into the starting lineup like he has in each of the last two years with Fulham. That being said injuries happen too and if you look at the medical past of people like A. Johnson, Bullard, Murphy, an opportunity could open up.

-Eddie Johnson is one of those buys so I would say at this point RH sees him as a super sub. I would like to see him loaned out to another club but I doubt that happens this close to the season starting.

Possible players in- I heard that Fulham was interested in Oguchi Onyewu a while ago but have heard nothing since. If the defense looks bad early on it’s possible that Fulham makes a panic buy.

The bottom line is it is pretty sad when one of the best players on the USMNT has a hard time just making the bench for a perennial PL bottom dweller. That being said I hope I’m wrong and my favorite player starts this Saturday.

  8. I was just visiting the Fulham website and it looks like Johnson has a better chance of dressing than Dempsey does. Any idea what happened at Team America?

  9. Does Sammy Ochoa still play in Mexico?

Ives, any chance you’ll also bring back the Concacaf players abroad column as well. With WCQ right around the corner, would be great to see how our opponents players are performing.

I also hope that Heath Pearce’s lack of minutes has nothing to do with him being back in the doghouse. Guy played well for the US this summer, so if he isn’t going to get playing time, hopefully he’ll return to MLS or another team in Europe so he gets regular time.

  11. Yeah, Dempsey is going to have a hard time knocking Zoli off.

With the departure of McBride and Bocanegra, Fulhamerica era is probably over now. At the end of the year, you had a sense Bilbo Baggins (Hodgsen) was giving Dempsey a chance, but was not liking what he saw.

Dempsey’s form towards the end of the year hurt him. Gera is motivated by his new contract and upcoming WCQ for Hungary.

  12. uggh, say it ain’t so, Johnny. I was hoping Dempsey might wind up getting some use at what I’ve always felt was his true position as an attacking mid. With the new guys up top it could really work well for him… too much to hope for I guess

  13. For next weekend sad to say it looks like Clint Dempsey has lost his starting spot to Zoltan Gera at LM and Eddie Johnson looks like he won’t even be on the bench. I wish Fulham would loan these players out if they don’t intend to play them.

  14. Carlos Diaz is playing at Ferencvaros in Hungary. He is a U20 player who came from St. Mary’s College in CA.

He did not play this weekend because he is waiting for his paperwork to get cleared.

  15. correct me if I’m wrong, but Andrew Jacobson doesn’t play for Lorient anymore. He was on trial with some lower French team, last I heard.
