Chelsea to make announcement, is Robinho on the way?

Robinho_ap

Chelsea FC has scheduled a press conference for noon today, where a big announcement is expected to be made. If recent reports are any indication, the press conference could be to announce the acquisition of Brazlian star Robinho from Real Madrid.

According to reports out of England, Chelsea has increased its offer for Robinho to $46.8 million, a bid Real Madrid looks poised to accept.

What do you think of Robinho joining Chelsea? Would he make the Blues EPL favorites? Will Robinho adapt well to the EPL? Is he better off staying in La Liga?

  1. Panic over i guess, Lamps signs his extended contract and Joe Cole nets a beauty against Pompey!

I still fancy Chelsea will sign a big name before the transfer window closes though and it’ll more than likely be a wide player.

Robinho, Kaka or (highly unlikely but i guess plausible) Drenthe.

  2. petey- you’re kidding right? he’s about as good as gareth barry dude. he’s not even close to gerrard…let alone the other 2 mids on his team: essien who is far more consistent and important to chelsea’s success and ballack who was way more influential in games that mattered than frank. is he even as good as carrick or hargreaves or the now 55 y/o paul scholes? if he is it’s barely.

  3. Don’t get too excited, Chelsea fans. Having watched him with Real Madrid for the last few years, I can tell you that he is very streaky, a little eccentric, and injury prone. When he is on, he is a great player. But you don’t get anything consistent from him, and Madrid knows it. So I am not surprised that they are selling him, especially when they know they can win games without him.

La Liga rewards creativity, and I sincerely doubt Robinho’s game is going to translate well in the EPL. If Berbatov is indeed headed to Man U, I think that more than negates anything Chelsea has done.

  4. agreed heffe, Lampard is essentially unsellable now. The will never get as much again as what they were offered this summer. So now the question is who goes and who comes in. Since Lamps in Chelsea for life now, who goes so that they can start addressing the age situation?

  5. Chelsea should have sold Lampard, and got money for him while they still could. Now they turn around and blow more money on him? I would rather have seen that money go for Robinho, Kaka, Villa, Arshavin…somebody else besides Lampard!!

  6. When 3 of your midfield are 30+ and all play in the center, and your subs are 3 wide players (Cole, SWP, Malouda) and a defensive mid in Mikel, it screams of squad imbalance. If Scolari chooses to play Cole in the hole, which is his natural position, rather than out wide it might work but we have to see what he does in game 1

  7. Ballack, Deco, and Lampard are all younger than Giggs and Scholes. So I don’t think SAF should have anything to say about old midfielders.

Meanwhile, Chelsea got rid of old Makalele, and still have a young Essien and a young Mikel.

  8. Danny you make a good point, I just can’t fathom Scolari rating SWP over Cole. It will be interesting to see who is playing this weekend.

  9. 5-Year deal!!! I dont know how many more 20 goal seasons Chelsea think they are going to get out of him after 30 years old. If you got cake like Roman, I guess it really doesnt manner. Eventually Chelsea are going to have to bring in good, YOUNG, midfielders. Ballack, Deco, and Lampard all 30. SAF might be right saying they peaked. But then again, how many 40+ goal seasons do you think Ronaldo will have again. My guess is none. An exception rather than the rule

  10. It would truly be a shame if the move inspired a Sheva-esque collapse when transitioning to another league. Robinho is a very entertaining player and I wish him the best.(Although, I certainly dont wish chelsea the best)

  11. i dont see robinho working out in england, just not his style. but i have been very wrong before…

chelsea is overrated… deco? hes 30 and barely over 5 feet tall. rio ferdinand and jonny woodgate will stomp him into the ground. scolari needs a year, and then chelsea will be back. at least thats my two cents

  12. As mentioned above, this is about Lampard signing a new deal. If Robinho does eventually move to Chelsea, that would probably spell the end of Shaun Wright-Phillips and not Joe Cole. I still think Joe Cole is one of their best players, even with all of the players they’ve brought in lately.

  13. does that cement joe cole’s leaving then if this happens? personally i’d rather have cole than robinho in the prem but robinho everywhere else. maybe he’ll surprise me though…he’s such a small guy. to say that he’s “slighter” than ronaldo is a huge understatement…robinho really is a tiny dude. that being said if he does come he’ll have a “bad” year and score like 10 goals. dude is good.

  14. At this point I don’t even care. Chelsea have proven they misuse (or don’t use) their superstars. No manager on earth can keep this team in line. They need to go back to having a first XI with bench players, and that’s that. It’s the only way they can get back to winning more trophies. Chelsea fans can be as happy as they want with this bullsh, but they really need to pen their eyes and realize the team is falling apart with each new giant ego that is relegated to the bench.

P.S. “Reputable” and “West Ham” can never be used in the same sentence, there are laws against it.

  15. Dan,

A very reputable West Ham site (kumb.com) says the Hammers inquired about Cole this week. It would pretty much make my year if that happened, i doubt there is any chance of it. Though its clear he’d get more 1st team chances there than pretty much everywhere else…

  16. I have strong reason to believe it’s a done deal at £24 million. Good news on the one hand, Robinho is a class act, but i really hope it doesn’t hasten the exit of Joe Cole to Liverpool (or anywhere else for that matter).

  17. i’ll put everything i got on Dannyc58 being right about today’s press conference, though with talks of joe cole leaving i could see robinho get there maybe later this week.

  18. I don’t think Robinho will adapt to English play. But what do I know? I also think he’s too creative for Chelsea’s lull-your-opponent-to-sleep style of play.

  19. I think this is great.

I’m interested to see how his style of play goes over in England. We always here that the style of play in England is better suited for the bigger, more physical player. But he’ll have an impact, OBVIOUSLY, and I think a pretty big one at that.

I can’t wait for the season to start.

    Oh, and FIRE NOWAK!!!!

  20. I think it takes him AT LEAST a year to adjust. Deco/Robinho/Unibrow RB, and Scolari all will have an adjustment period. I think they don’t match up to Man U at all…

  21. Im a Chelsea Fan now, this makes the Man U and Chelsea matches even more exciting. Robinho and C Ronaldo on the same field ooooo. But this makes Chelsea the clear favorite, even if Man U makes the Berbatov move

  22. This will be very interesting to watch. Robinho instantly becomes the most creative player in the EPL (I didn’t say best), but it remains to be seen how his skills translate there. He is slighter in build than a C. Ronaldo, and you have to wonder if his dribbling skills-he can truly embarass even the best defenders-will leave him subject to some rough justice. Robinho is also a bit of a complainer (though not a diver). All that said, he is one of a handful of players who you want to watch everytime his foot touches the ball. How he does will be a true test of how “beautiful” the EPL can be, or whether Spain currently has a European monopoly on attractive soccer.
