Men’s Olympic Soccer: Matchday One (Your Running Commentary

Good morning folks. Today is the first day of Men’s Olympic soccer action, with the second set of games about to get under way.

These are the matches taking place right now:

  • Argentina vs. Ivory Coast
  • Netherlands vs. Nigeria
  • China vs. New Zealand
  • South Korea vs. Cameroon

If you want to follow the matches, the best place to do so is at the NBC Olympics website, which has live streaming video as well as my live commentary during the match (I am providing commentary for the Netherlands-Nigeria match). As always, you can share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play on any of the matches in the comments section here on SBI.

Enjoy the matches

  1. Has anyone been able to get the nbcolympics.com player to play full screen? I really would rather sit on my couch watching a full screen video than sit in a chair staring at a tiny little video for 2 hours.

  2. Watched the game for a second time and I can honestly say everyone on the team was hit or miss. It is a bit sad to me that Japan was far more creative then we were and I though Freddy got hosed on some called but he really as to be tougher. I think Jozy will help in the coming games but guys… he is not the second coming. I thought SK was out of position several times and Orozco gave very little support to Rogers, though Robbie played fairly well and is alaway dangerous down the flank.

Bradley, Adu and Guzan all took stupid yellow cards.

The main point is we are on top of the group and the Dutch did not look spectacular and unbeatable.

  3. Good game. USA was definitely lucky. Japan had at least 6 clear shots on goal. Close range. Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. We need to shore up the left flank, Holden and Orozco were beat consistently. Would love to see Altidore start with McBride and Adu in withdrawn/midfield role – he’s better there than at forward. 3 points is HUGE.

  4. Ives,

Any word or thoughts on why Nowak decided not to start Altidore. I’m please with the win (though I felt it was fortunate), but I woke up at 4 a.m. and am now exhausted at work, and one of the players I was most excited to watch this Olympics didn’t step on the turf until the 74th minute…..

Obviously Nowak looks like a genius since Holden scored the 1 goal, but just curious as to your thoughts on why what had to have a been a fairly last minute decision on Altidore was made?

  5. I’m sure Peter left Jozy of because he was confident that we could win this game with out him, I think he was trying to give Jozy a break because the bigger and more physical games are coming up.

  6. By the way, check out the Brazil goal and the first Italy goal. Very nice.

Also what exactly was the goalkeeper doing on Rossi’s PK?

  7. “Figures that Cablevision wouldn’t participate in allowing the Olympics feed. Oh well…. NM”

Yes, Cablevision sucks. But I did find that you can get the online stuff by using one of the ZIP codes and cable providers that some of the commenters have been leaving here in comments.

  8. OK, the first day is in. US, Netherlands and Nigeria all played with iron legs. Japan is unlucky, but who cares (?!). Next games will be more fun, as it almost always the case. Both Netherlands and Nigeria are quality sides but nothing like gods – they can be managed. Its harder not to be scared of Argentina. Ivory Coast gave them a good run though.

  9. Well, only 4 teams in the tournament have managed a win so far and we are one of them. That’s something we can take away from today.

  10. Yes guys, I definitely wish I had covered Argentina-Ivory Coast instead, but since Netherlands-Nigeria is in the U.S. team’s group I went that way instead. I’m sure I’ll be seeing Argentina in the knockout rounds.

  11. These games are all in China, right? I happened to be on espn.com, and above the Netherlands/Nigeria game it said it was at the PSV Stadium in Holland.

  12. Ekpo on in the 89th minute.

If anything I’m surprised with… how bland The Netherlands looks. Nigeria looks like the more difficult opponent at this point.

  13. Argentina goal. Messi takes a shot which the keeper deflects, but Acosta slides in at the far post to poke the deflection in. 2-1.

  14. After watching Ivory Coast give Argentina everything they can handle, the US tie against IC isn’t looking too bad. And neither Nigeria or Holland are impressing very much. We might make it out of our group after all.

  15. anybody know a site showing the games that won’t get blocked by my d-a-m-n job’s websense filter? 😉 i know the odds are long on that one.

  16. Dutch play like their NT against Russia – deflated. US can deal with that. If they step up, than that’s a question. Our guys should have some positive build up going into the second match.

  17. I’m not able to watch the NBC Olympics live stream. I’m in the US Army and am stationed in Italy. This sucks. I tried the zip code but didn’t work. Any guidance let me know.

  18. Hey y’all. Thanks for chiming in here. I think the Dutch would be more disappointed than Nigeria at a draw but I think the Dutch see Nigeria as the biggest threat in the group. That might explain why the Dutch are approaching this game so cautiously.

Royston Drenthe is a beast, so good and so tough.

    Ryan Babel seems off.

Still waiting for DeGuzman to show me something.

Liking what I’m seeing from Nigeria

  19. does anybody have a working zip code tv service provider combination for the nbcolympics website?…i live in new york and for some reason cablevision is not a part of the agreement to show the highlights and live coverage.

  20. The whole NBC online commentary thing is kind of cool. The text reads easily and the rapid updates are nice, Ives. Do you really think each team would be happy with a draw, though? I feel like the USA could definitely get one more point in this group.

  21. Meanwhile Argentina and Ivory Coast are going at each other. IC can’t handle Argentina’s passing and movement, but the Argentines are having a hard time with IC’s speed. Lots of quality chances on both sides. Very entertaining game.

  23. an exciting game…. Japan had some scary chances at the begining of the game, but the US pulled through and looked good throughout the game…. obviously there was some sloppy play, but overall i thought we did fine

lucky to come away with the 3 pts, Japan looked very control and disciplined… i could see Japan upsetting either the Dutch or Nigeria….

Wynne looked pretty good… still a bit raw in his play, but not a bad showing…

Edu played extremely well… solid solid solid

Bradley was missing at points in the game, but overall i thought he did very well… his shot on goal (from the BMB passback) was stellar, unfortunately the japanese GK was in the perfect position to make an easy save…

Adu fell off the ball to easily… i think he may have embelished some of the fouls, and the ref took notice… so when he was clearly fouled the ref didnt call it

BMB- outside of the fouls he took to create set plays, i dont think BMB did much of anything… however, he played a well target forward, but just could produce…

Rogers was amazing…. quality moving with and without the ball… if he could have connected with some better crosses, the US would have scored another goal at least… perhaps thats what he needs to work on… his 1 v 1 is top notch…

Kljestan looked out of his game… quite easily the player who made the most mistakes… but showed flashes of some decent play
