The first weekend of European soccer action came and went and there are stories galore to touch on, including a few involving American players. With the transfer market moving into its final stages, here are some stories to get your day and week going:
Edu completes Rangers switch
U.S. national team midfielder Maurice Edu completed his $5 million move to Glasgow Rangers over the weekend, agreeing to a five-year deal with the Scottish power. Edu must still secure a UK work permit, but if and when he does, he is expected to challenge for a starting role with Rangers immediately.
Robinho staying at Real Madrid
Brazilian star Robinho’s long-rumored move to Chelsea isn’t happening. So says Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon, who stated on Monday that Robinho would be staying put. Considering how good Chelsea looked in its opening week mauling of Portsmouth you wonder whether Chelsea really needed the speedy trickster. The Blues could certainly use a forward to fill out its stable up top but Real Madrid’s asking price of almost $70 million probably killed any chances of a deal.
Berbatov to Tottenham: Let me leave
Disgruntled Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov has asked Tottenham to let him go, with his potential transfer to Tottenham Manchester United looking more and more likely. Berbatov came off the bench during Tottenham’s 2-1 loss to Middlesbrough on Saturday and looked far from pleased about not being in the starting lineup. Will Spurs sell him? It seems like a foregone conclusion at this point. What remains to been is just who Tottenham will buy with the money, with Andrei Arshavin still considered the most likely player to arrive in White Hart Lane.
That’s all for now. Share your thoughts on these and any other stories that emerge this morning in the comments section below.
Hey, how do transfer fees actually work?
If im not mistaken TFC gets 60% of the 5 million right?
It gets split into thirds and allocated to transfers, salaries and the academy right?
Please clarify if ya dont mind Ives, its a bitch to try and find
“Dimitar Berbatov has asked Tottenham to let him go, with his potential transfer to Tottenham looking more and more likely.”
Huh?
so awesome for mo. hope he breaks into the 1st team.
Edu is expected to compete for Defensive midfield duties behind Kevin Thomson (starter), Christian Dailly (old utility defender) and the cultured Brahim Hemdani (European starter/may be sold due to Rangers elimination in Europe this season).
Other central midfielders Rangers have are the just signed Steven Davis, who was on loan last year, just signed Pedro Mendes, and club talisman Barry Ferguson (injured).
Mo’ may also be there to provide cover at CB and RB. He will have a hard time breaking into the side if Mendes, Ferguson, Davis, and Thomson (+Hemdani) are healthy at the same time.
This is all still subject to a work permit being approved.
Come on Berba come to United
IVES, where will Edu play at Rangers? CDM or CB or just CM? Will they try to use him like Michael Bradley is used at Heerenveen?
Is there any difference in Berbatov looking “not pleased” or extremely happy, the guy never smiles
good for edu, i think hes got a bright future. lets just hope this is a stepping stone to a bigger club
