This weekend’s soccer on TV

For the second straight week, a showdown between EPL powerhouses serves as the marquee attraction of the weekend.

Manchester United travels to Stamford Bridge on Sunday to take on Chelsea in a rematch of last May’s UEFA Champions League final, won by the Red Devils. Man Utd is coming off a disappointing loss to Liverpool and will need at least a point from this match to avoid having Chelsea pull away at the top of the standings.

The match should also signal the season EPL debut for Cristiano Ronaldo, who made his return from ankle surgery at midweek against Villarreal in Champions League play.

Man U vs. Chelsea isn’t the only quality match this weekend. here is a rundown of the Top Five matches to watch this weekend:

This weekend’s Top Five Matches

1. Manchester United at Chelsea. Easily the best match of the weekend. A real can’t-miss encounter.

2. Werder Bremen at Bayern Munich. Two of the best offensive teams in Germany should put on an entertaining show.

3. Lazio at AC Milan. Lazio is off to a fast start in Serie A. AC Milan? Not so much. Despite that, this should be an intense clash.

4. D.C. United at Los Angeles Galaxy. You might want to have my head checked for including this game in the Top Five but I can’t see this game not having four or five goals and some wide-open soccer.

5. Sevilla at Real Betis. You can’t go with wrong with an intense rivalry like this one, even if Betis isn’t as song as it once was.

  1. From Bundesliga LIVE Radio: Michael Bradley is starting for M’Gladbach today. M’Gladbach is playing against Hertha Berlin at Borussia Park right now. They’ve lined up in a 451…Bradley is playing as one of two dmids…the one on the left to be precise.

  2. DannyC, since you have one of my favorite Chelsea boys as a manager now (and another old Blue as a coach), I’ll be keeping a close watch on your squad. Best of fortunes to you. I think you guys finish 11th or 12th but I hope for better.

  3. Sorry Ives,

You know I’m snippy about West Ham. There is no reason (yet) to think they cannot improve on their top 10 finish from last year, in 8th right now–so I felt hopeless was harsh.

    Just to explain myself…

  4. Lets’ not forget the big Livorno-Pisa Serie B matchup on RAI at 9:30 am Saturday. Yes, I am joking for all you Italian soccer bashers.

  5. Fair enough Danny. I was thinking more about Newcastle than West Ham. I took the game out of the Top Five and replaced it with the Sevilla Clasico.

  8. Ives,

Your assement on West Ham couldn’t be further from reality. Watch some games before you make blanket statements like that please.

  9. Christ i want Bremen to kill it this weekend.

Dunno if they have it in em after that lackluster tie on weds (not from lack of effort but lack of bloody goals). Allofs is pretty po’d so perhaps thatll put a spark under the boys’ arses. Fingers crossed
