If there are players I forgot to list feel free to list them below. Please remember that I’m trying to focus on first divisions and, in some cases, second divisions, so keep that in mind when suggesting players for the list.

  1. EJ better start playing out of his ass, if he wants to guarantee a spot in South Africa in 2 years or Brian Ching/Charlie Davies will take it.

  2. I was disappointed Rossi chose to play for Italy, but I think he should still be included. I still root for him to do well for Villareal (although not necessarily for Italy), and he’s definitely American. If you don’t want to read about him, skip over him.

  3. Subotic was also involved (I believe directly) with giving up 2 goals for Schalke. Check the tape. While his goal was a good contribution, he still has a ways to go to develop as a professional.

Jerry White hit a golazo for Aarhus and Davies hit his 10th of the season for Hammarby. I think both of those guys deserved to be called into the national team again.

Don’t know why we’re stuck on including Rossi and Lapira, I understand they are Americans by citizenship (and maybe somewhat by identity), but both have elected to play for other national teams (Ireland in Lapira’s case).

  4. Ives,

Rossi left for Parma when he turned 13 and you are correct even today when Rossi plays for Azurrini they say he is Blueta was born in NJ /USA.

  5. Great news for Jozy and Mo but one has to be concerned about the continued lack of playing time of most of our MNT players in Europe.

  6. Rossi is a “passport” american. If he truly associated with this country he would play for the US. Im over the fact he isnt playing for the US, but it pisses me off that so many want him to be on “Americans Abroad.” He has already decided where his future lies, which I strongly disagree with but their is nothing that is going to change it. It seems like Ives is just trying to stir stuff up by including Rossi on this. The people have spoken, and WE DONT WANT ROSSI ON AMERICANS ABROAD. He is as much of an American as Benny Feilhaber is Brazilian

  7. Giuseppe Rossi did not dress for Villarreal. He missed the match with an ankle injury.

Some of you need to get a life, you are bunch of LOSERS….This is Ives Site and if don’t like what he reports then go back to your holes.

  8. Rossi is an American – dictated by passport. He’s chosen to play for the Italian team. It’s Ives website – he can do what he wants on it. Rossi – is a Jersey boy, I’m sure folks there want to see his progress.

For me – I don’t have to root for him – nor do I pine for him to play for the US. He’s made his choice.

I’d put an asterisk behind his name – just so we don’t waste thread time with some goofball asking why Rossi hasn’t been called up by BB yet.

  9. Thanks for these updates again Ives. I hate to see our Americans not even DRESSING to play in sub-par 2nd division leagues. Bradley should have played for Borussia, and every time I see the Subotic updates, he scores. Unbelievable, we NEED him. Get rid of that @$$h0l3 rossi Ives

  10. Seems like this players list is getting longer each week, which is a good thing. I vote for excluding Rossi though, especially since Ives said the poll would dictate his inclusion/exclusion. I agree with mike; screw Italy. Ives, keep your word and leave Rossi out!

  11. Some of you people are ridiculous. It doesn’t matter how you feel about Italia, the fact is, Giuseppe Rossi is and will forever be American. He chose to represent another country and you can be bitter about that all you want but it doesn’t suddenly revoke his status as an American.

  12. Rocky,if the US had selected Torres, Pachuca would of let him play. Torres said he wanted to get settled with his club. And Jordan, quit being such an ass.

  13. “I know I said I’d yank him if enough people voted for him to be excluded but I’m going to keep him on.”

    Hah. Was wondering about that.

If I were Ives, I would exclude Rossi just so every Weekend Rewind Thread doesn’t devolve into “How Do You Feel About Guiseppi Rossi” with Ives having to defend his decision. Because the entire argument is tiresome.

(FWIW, I voted in Ives’s poll to exclude Rossi, and don’t think of him as American.)

  15. Bradley barely had time to practice; Feilhaber’s hurt (knee); Davies will move – thank goodness he’s not stuck in MLS; Rongen blew it, agreed, but it’s still up to Subotic; Rossi is a patriot – just not one of ours – I enjoy following his progress.

  16. Some of you ask why Ives chooses to include some and not include other Americans or quasi-Americans. How about because he owns the website and he can do what he wants at his discretion. Now I say that in half-jest knowing that he wants to cater to his readers and get input. But still, chill out and accept the decisions brothers

  17. Sorry Ives,

Your argument against Edgar Castillo and for Bebedict Aldrich Ames Rossi doesnt wash.

I for one hate the Italian National team just as much as I hate the Mexican one.

Heck at least the Mexicans come out to play. Allegedly Italy is more talented but prefers to ruin the beautiful game and bunker down earning an undeserved WC when they couldnt even beat the US.

Rossi is as much a traitor as the Tokyo Rose and just as un-American as Jane Fonda.

  18. Bradley couldnt get on the field for a team that was bad enough to lose 5-1 to Hannover? Great move.

Feilhaber cant get on the field for ABC ARGUS or whatever they are called.

Hopefully Davies can move to a real league next year.

Watching Subotic score all these goals just makes me want to burn the incompetent Rongen at the stake even more.

Hey Ives didnt that poll you took indicate that the majority dont want Benedict Rossi included as a YA?

  19. Torres had the choice of whether he would go to the Olympics or stay with Pachuca. He told Luis Bueno of SI.com and the Riverside Press Enterprise (and sideline views of course) that he would rather settle in at Pachuca and fight for a first-team spot than go to the Olympics with the U.S.

That said, Torres also said he is still open to playing for the USMNT.

  20. Ives, since you changed from “Jersey flair” (or something like that) to “American voice” I think you may have lost one of your more powerful arguments for including Rossi. Personally I want to know what’s going on with him but I’m not from the NY/NJ area… NY/NJ folks might be more interested in him as a local than others are with him as a quasi-national, or a disputed national or whatever. I believe you mentioned that local connections once as a reason for including him.

But, in the end, I go with what RK said.

  21. You know…you Rossi-haters could just not say anything, and it wouldn’t be an issue. You could just read the one line and move on. Instead, you all complain, and the column become monopolized by this instead of us all discussing Jozy’s great debut.

Ives, I suppose you should just put the disclaimer on every Americans Abroad post.

  22. Matt, Hangeland lived in the USA for a year or two at birth, Jones never lived in the United States and apparently barely knew, if at all, his American father. You have an argument for Castillo but the fact that he chose to play for Mexico, the U.S. team’s arch-rival, makes him persona non grata.

Rossi grew up in the United States until he was 14, learning the basics of the game and honing his skills here in the United States. He’s achieved a high level and, regardless of his decision to play for Italy or the feeling some American soccer fans have about that, how Rossi does still does mean something for American soccer. I don’t think people grasp that Rossi is still known around the world as an American-born player. His nickname in the Parma youth ranks was ‘America’.

I know I said I’d yank him if enough people voted for him to be excluded but I’m going to keep him on.

And lastly, Subotic will come off this list when he is tied to another national team. Since he can still play for the United States under FIFA rules I will list him. I think giving his career attention here in the United States can only help him want to play for the U.S. national team, even if right now he’s still trying to maneuver his way into the German national team set-up.

  23. Ives, thanks for using the inclusive notion of Americans Abroad and avoiding narrow mindedness. Like to think it is the American way to be inclusive.

  24. Looking ahead, Jozy could play next weekend, too. They play at upstart Numancia. Recently promoted, they beat Barca at home the first weekend, and just lost at Real Madrid 4-3. I think the schedule-makers hate Numancia!

Rossi and Nihat are out for the ManU game, leaving only Llorente and Franco for the match. I wouldn’t be surprised if Villarreal parked the bus and only played Llorente up top, so a healthy, rested, and in-great-form Jozy may see time next weekend.

  25. Great for Jozy. That kid is sooo good. He’s Drogba reincarnated (except Didier isn’t dead).

Bradley, ugh. I hope this isn’t a Feilhaber all over again (not playing for a terrible team that’s bound for relegation anyway).

Speaking of Benny, WTF?? He’s glued to the bench at Aarhus?

  26. Ives:

Great job on this American Abroad. Personally, I’d prefer regular updates on the 2nd division of the “Big 4” leagues, but not Norway’s or France’s 2nd division.

I saw your explanation for why you include Rossi, Padilla, and others on the list, and I understand your affinity for Rossi, but my theory is that an American in soccer is different than an American in citizenship. Padilla turned his back on the U-20 squad to play (or hope to play) for our top rival, he just shouldn’t be an American Abroad.

  27. I think Dempsey is going to find very few minutes this year at Fulham unless there is a rash of injuries. He just doesn’t have a natural slot in fit position and with Zamora and Johnson there will be very few minutes available up front. And Murphy, Davies and Bullard are not coming out unless injured period. This is not a shot at Dempsey- more just a matter of fact of how things are lining up at Fulham these days.

Does anyone know when Spector and Simek are going to be fit? Thanks in advance.

  28. Why do people care if Rossi or any other American player who decides to play for another country are or are not listed? It’s so petty! I am happy to read about anyone with American ties playing abroad.

Two notes: The list of did not dress is amazing. And I wonder who is injured more -Adin Brown, Spector, Simek or John O’Brien.

  32. Ives, what’s the deal with the Mexican-Americans playing the Mexico? I know Orozco is playing for the US and Danny Hernandez isn’t good enough for either. What about Padilla, Torres, and Vidal?
