CONCACAF Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Marlon_king_1_ap

It wasn’t a great international window for the Jamaican national team, what with two World Cup qualifying losses and the firing of head coach Rene Simoes, but at least one Jamaican player rebounded well from the disappointment.

Marlon King delivered two goals in Hull’s 2-1 win vs. Newcastle on Saturday. King was one of three Jamaicans to score goals this weekend. Damion Stewart notched a goal for Queens Park Rangers while Luton Shelton tallied for Valarenga. Now if only whoever the new Jamaica national team coach is (word is Theodore Whitmore is the front-runner) can harness some of this goal-scoring maybe the Reggae Boyz can turn things around in World Cup qualifying (okay, maybe not).

Here is how the rest of CONCACAF’s European-based players did this past weekend:

Keep in mind that I will focus on top first divisions in Europe with the second divisions in England and Germany also being included (I will also look to add Serie B as well as the Spanish second division if possible). There may be players in very small leagues (like say Moldova or Poland) but my inclusion of players in those leagues is contingent on being able to find a reliable source of information on those leagues.

Feel free to share your thoughts on these performances in the comments section below.

  1. Mig, what does that say about Canadians when they are reading an American soccer blog? Trailer Trash

An American soccer blog that happens to cover the league that Toronto FC plays in. Most Toronto FC fans that come to this site have some interest in their national team too.

  2. Did you happen to look at the SBI statistics on the number of Canadian viewers. Try hopping out of the trailer and get out a bit more.

  3. Yeah, what Mig said. I love the Concacaf Abroad piece, think it’s great to keep tabs on how the fortunes of other players in the region play out. Keep up the great work Ives.

  5. Ives, can we please stop with the CONCACAF garbage. The only other in CONCACAF country that deserves mentioning is Mexico. I hate them but I respect the talent they produce.

As proved by last weeks qualifiers, Canada and other CONCACAF nations don’t even deserve a mention.

  6. Here’s a couple of Canadians that were missed:

David Hoilett – FC St Pauli (GER-2)

    Nik Ledgerwood – 1860 Munich (GER-2)

Paul Stalteri – Tottenham Hotspurs (ENG-1)

Mike Klukowsi – Club Brugge (BEL-1)

Adrian Cann – Esbjerg fB (DEN-1)

Andrew Ornoch – Esbjerg fB (DEN-1)

Lars Hirschfeld – CFR Cluj (ROM-1)

    Kenny Stamatopolous – Tromso (NOR-1)

Its to my understanding a lot of these players may not have played last week, but I believe Hoilett scored a goal. There they are anyways in case you didn’t know about them.

  7. Sunderland has been saying all along that Yorke wasn’t available to T & T in the U.S. game due to injury. He didn’t play for Sunderland last weekend because he still wasn’t able to play.

He was born in Calgary after all.[/b]

bah, Hargreaves plays for England, makes him not really Canadian, in my mind. After all, if he was really Canadian he’d be playing for Canada wouldn’t he? Same can said about Judas De Guzman too, traitors the lot of them.. 😛

  9. So after all the trouble about Dwight Yorke being recalled by Sunderland, he doesn’t even dress? Did Edwards and Yorke not dress as a “screw you” to T&T?
